  • 2 Kgs 17:24-41 : 24 The king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim, and settled them in the towns of Samaria in place of the Israelites. They took possession of Samaria and lived in its towns. 25 When they first lived there, they did not fear the Lord. So the Lord sent lions among them, which killed some of the people. 26 It was said to the king of Assyria, 'The nations you have resettled in the towns of Samaria do not know the customs of the God of the land. He has sent lions among them, which are killing them because the people do not know His customs.' 27 Then the king of Assyria gave this order: 'Send back one of the priests you took captive from Samaria. Let him live there and teach the people the customs of the God of the land.' 28 So one of the priests who had been taken captive from Samaria came back and lived in Bethel. He taught them how they should fear the Lord. 29 But each nation made its own gods and set them up in the shrines of the high places that the Samaritans had made—each nation in the towns where they lived. 30 The men from Babylon made Sukkoth Benoth, the men from Cuthah made Nergal, and the men from Hamath made Ashima. 31 The Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire as sacrifices to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. 32 They feared the Lord, but they also appointed for themselves all sorts of priests for the high places, who made sacrifices for them in the shrines of the high places. 33 They feared the Lord, but they also served their own gods according to the practices of the nations from which they had been deported. 34 To this day they continue to practice their former customs. They neither fear the Lord nor follow the statutes, ordinances, laws, and commandments that the Lord gave the descendants of Jacob, whom He named Israel. 35 The Lord made a covenant with them and commanded them, saying, 'Do not fear other gods, do not bow down to them, do not serve them, and do not sacrifice to them.' 36 But fear only the Lord, who brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power and an outstretched arm. Worship Him and sacrifice to Him alone. 37 And you shall always observe and follow the statutes, ordinances, the law, and the commandment that He wrote for you. Do not fear other gods. 38 Do not forget the covenant that I made with you, and do not fear other gods. 39 Rather, fear the Lord your God, and He will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies. 40 But they would not listen. Instead, they continued to act according to their former customs. 41 So these nations feared the Lord, but they also served their carved images. Their children and grandchildren continued to do as their fathers did, even to this day.

Then they asked him to stay for a few days. 1 The apostles and the believers throughout Judea heard that even the Gentiles had accepted the word of God. 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, those who were of the circumcision group began to argue with him, 3 saying, 'You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.' 4 But Peter began to explain it to them step by step, saying: 5 'I was in the city of Joppa praying, and I saw in a trance a vision: something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to me. 6 As I looked closely at it, I noticed four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles, and birds of the air. 7 I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter; kill and eat.’ 8 But I said, ‘Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ 9 The voice spoke from heaven a second time: ‘What God has made clean, you must not call unclean.’ 10 This happened three times, and then the whole object was pulled up into heaven. 11 Just then, three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea arrived at the house where I was staying. 12 The Spirit told me to go with them without hesitation. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man's house. 13 He told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house and saying, ‘Send men to Joppa and bring back Simon, who is called Peter. 14 He will speak words to you by which you and your entire household will be saved. 15 As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had on us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17 If then God gave them the same gift that He gave to us after we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God's way? 18 When they heard this, they became silent and glorified God, saying, 'So then, God has granted repentance leading to life even to the Gentiles.'

  • Acts 8:5-9 : 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed Christ to them. 6 The crowds, united in one mind, paid close attention to what Philip was saying as they heard and saw the miraculous signs he was performing. 7 For many who were possessed by unclean spirits were freed as the spirits came out, crying out in a loud voice, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city. 9 Now there was a man named Simon who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great. 10 Everyone, from the least to the greatest, paid attention to him and said, 'This man is the great power of God.' 11 They followed him because he had amazed them with his magic for a long time. 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Even Simon himself believed, and after he was baptized, he stayed close to Philip, and he marveled as he watched the signs and miracles that were happening. 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for them to receive the Holy Spirit, 16 For the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money. 19 He said, 'Give me this authority too, so that everyone I lay my hands on may receive the Holy Spirit.' 20 But Peter said to him, 'May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!' 21 You have no part or share in this ministry because your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such thoughts in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin. 24 Then Simon answered, 'Pray to the Lord for me, so that nothing you have said may happen to me.' 25 When they had testified and proclaimed the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the good news to many Samaritan villages.
