- Num 3:1-4:49 : 1 These are the generations of Aaron and Moses at the time when the LORD spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai. 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, who were set apart to serve as priests. 4 Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered unauthorized fire before Him in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron. 5 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 6 Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may assist him. 7 They shall be responsible for his duties and the duties of the entire congregation before the tent of meeting, to perform the service of the tabernacle. 8 They shall care for all the furnishings of the tent of meeting and the duties of the people of Israel, to perform the service of the tabernacle. 9 You shall give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are wholly given to him from among the people of Israel. 10 But you shall appoint Aaron and his sons to be responsible for their priesthood, and any unauthorized person who approaches it shall be put to death. 11 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 12 I have taken the Levites from among the people of Israel instead of every firstborn who opens the womb among the people of Israel. The Levites shall be mine. 13 For all the firstborn are mine. On the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated for myself all the firstborn in Israel, both of humans and of animals. They shall be mine. I am the LORD. 14 The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying: 15 Take a census of the sons of Levi, by their fathers' houses and by their clans. Count every male a month old and upward. 16 So Moses listed them according to the command of the LORD, as he had been instructed. 17 These were the names of the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 18 The names of the sons of Gershon by their clans were Libni and Shimei. 19 The sons of Kohath by their clans were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. 20 The sons of Merari by their clans were Mahli and Mushi. These are the clans of Levi, according to their fathers' houses. 21 To Gershon belonged the clan of the Libnites and the clan of the Shimeites. These are the clans of the Gershonites. 22 Their census, counting every male a month old and upward, numbered 7,500. 23 The clans of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle on the west side. 24 The leader of the fathers' house of the Gershonites was Eliasaph the son of Lael. 25 The duties of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting included the tabernacle, the tent, its covering, the curtain at the entrance of the tent of meeting, 26 the hangings of the courtyard, the curtain at the entrance of the courtyard that surrounds the tabernacle and the altar, its ropes, and all the service connected with them. 27 To Kohath belonged the clan of the Amramites, the clan of the Izharites, the clan of the Hebronites, and the clan of the Uzzielites. These are the clans of the Kohathites. 28 Their census, counting every male a month old and upward, numbered 8,600, responsible for the duties of the sanctuary. 29 The clans of the Kohathites were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle. 30 The leader of the fathers' house of the clans of the Kohathites was Elizaphan the son of Uzziel. 31 Their duty included the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the vessels of the sanctuary used in ministering, the screen, and all the work related to these. 32 The chief of the leaders of the Levites was Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, who had oversight of those keeping charge of the sanctuary. 33 To Merari belonged the clan of the Mahlites and the clan of the Mushites. These are the clans of Merari. 34 Their census, counting every male a month old and upward, numbered 6,200. 35 The leader of the fathers' house of the clans of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle. 36 The appointed duty of the sons of Merari included the frames of the tabernacle, its bars, pillars, bases, all its fittings, and all the work associated with these. 37 This also included the pillars of the courtyard all around, their bases, pegs, cords, and all related work. 38 Those to camp in front of the tabernacle, on the east side before the tent of meeting, were Moses, Aaron, and his sons, keeping charge of the sanctuary for the duties of the people of Israel. Any outsider who approached was to be put to death. 39 The total number of Levites whom Moses and Aaron counted as commanded by the LORD, by their clans, every male a month old and upward, was 22,000. 40 The LORD said to Moses, "Take a census of all the firstborn males of the people of Israel, a month old and upward, and count their names." 41 "And you shall take the Levites for me—I am the LORD—in place of all the firstborn among the people of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of the people of Israel." 42 So Moses counted all the firstborn among the people of Israel as the LORD commanded him. 43 The total number of firstborn males, counted by name from a month old and upward, was 22,273. 44 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 45 Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn males among the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites in place of the livestock of the Israelites. The Levites shall be mine. I am the LORD. 46 For the redemption price of the 273 firstborn Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites, 47 collect five shekels for each individual, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs. 48 Give the silver for the redemption of the excess to Aaron and his sons. 49 So Moses collected the redemption silver from those who exceeded the number of the Levites. 50 From the firstborn of the Israelites, he collected a total of 1,365 shekels, measured by the sanctuary shekel. 51 Moses gave the redemption silver to Aaron and his sons, as directed by the LORD, just as the LORD commanded Moses. 1 The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 2 Take a census of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families and by their ancestral houses. 3 Count all those from thirty years old to fifty years old who come to serve in the work of the tent of meeting. 4 This is the work of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting: caring for the most holy things. 5 When the camp prepares to set out, Aaron and his sons shall come and take down the curtain and cover the ark of the testimony with it. 6 They shall put over it a covering of fine leather, and spread a cloth of pure blue over that, and then insert its poles. 7 On the table of the presence they shall spread a blue cloth and place on it the plates, the dishes, the bowls, and the jars for the drink offering, and the continual bread shall remain on it. 8 They shall spread a scarlet cloth over them, cover them with a covering of fine leather, and insert its poles. 9 They shall take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand used for light, along with its lamps, tongs, firepans, and all the oil vessels used in its service. 10 They shall place it and all its utensils inside a covering of fine leather and put it on a carrying frame. 11 Over the golden altar they shall spread a blue cloth, cover it with a covering of fine leather, and insert its poles. 12 They shall take all the utensils used for serving in the sanctuary, place them in a blue cloth, cover them with a covering of fine leather, and put them on a carrying frame. 13 They shall remove the ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth over it. 14 They shall put on it all the utensils used for serving at the altar—the firepans, the forks, the shovels, the basins—all the utensils of the altar. They shall spread over it a covering of fine leather and insert its poles. 15 When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all its furnishings as the camp sets out, the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them, but they must not touch the holy things, lest they die. These are the tasks of the sons of Kohath regarding the tent of meeting. 16 The oversight of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, includes the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the regular grain offering, the anointing oil, the oversight of the entire tabernacle and everything in it, including its holy furnishings and utensils. 17 The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 18 Do not let the tribe of the Kohathite clans be cut off from the Levites. 19 Do this for them so that they may live and not die when they approach the most holy things. Aaron and his sons shall go in and assign each man his task and what he is to carry. 20 But the Kohathites must not go in to look at the holy things, even for a moment, or they will die. 21 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 22 Take a census of the sons of Gershon also, by their ancestral houses and by their clans. 23 Count all men from thirty years old to fifty years old who are eligible to serve in the work of the tent of meeting. 24 This is the service of the Gershonite clans: working and carrying burdens. 25 They shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting with its covering, the covering of fine leather that is on top of it, the screen for the entrance of the tent of meeting, 26 And the hangings of the courtyard, the screen for the entrance of the gate of the courtyard which surrounds the tabernacle and the altar, along with their cords, all their utensils for service, and everything assigned for their care—they shall serve. 27 Under the command of Aaron and his sons, shall be all the service of the Gershonites, all their burdens and all their work. You shall assign to them their responsibilities and duties. 28 This is the service of the Gershonite clans in the tent of meeting. Their responsibilities shall be under the direction of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest. 29 Count the sons of Merari by their clans and by their ancestral houses. 30 Count all men from thirty years old to fifty years old who qualify to work in the service of the tent of meeting. 31 This is what they are responsible to carry as part of all their work in the tent of meeting: the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, its posts, and its bases. 32 Also the posts of the surrounding courtyard, their bases, tent pegs, cords, and all their utensils for service. Assign their responsibilities by name for everything they are to carry. 33 This is the work of the Merarite clans, as part of all their service in the tent of meeting. It is under the supervision of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest. 34 So Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their clans and by their ancestral houses, 35 from thirty years old to fifty years old, everyone eligible to work in the service of the tent of meeting. 36 Their number by their families was 2,750. 37 These are the counts of the Kohathite families, all those who served in the work of the tent of meeting. They were numbered by Moses and Aaron according to the LORD’s command through Moses. 38 The Gershonite men were counted by their families and by their ancestral houses. 39 From thirty years old to fifty years old, all those who were eligible to serve in the work of the tent of meeting were counted. 40 The total number of those counted by their families and their ancestral houses was 2,630. 41 These are the counts of the Gershonite families who served in the work of the tent of meeting. They were counted by Moses and Aaron according to the LORD's command. 42 The Merarite men were counted by their families and by their ancestral houses. 43 From thirty years old to fifty years old, all those who were eligible for service in the work of the tent of meeting were counted. 44 The total number of those counted by their families was 3,200. 45 These are the counts of the Merarite families who were numbered by Moses and Aaron according to the LORD’s command through Moses. 46 All those numbered by Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of Israel were counted among the Levite clans by their families and by their ancestral houses. 47 From thirty years old to fifty years old, all those who were eligible for the work of serving and for carrying burdens in the tent of meeting were counted. 48 Their total number was 8,580. 49 Each man was assigned his work and his burden to carry, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they were numbered by Moses according to the LORD's command.
- Num 26:57-62 : 57 These are the families of the Levites by their clans: The clan of the Gershonites from Gershon, the clan of the Kohathites from Kohath, and the clan of the Merarites from Merari. 58 These are the clans of Levi: the Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan, and the Korahite clan. Kohath was the father of Amram. 59 The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, a daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. Jochebed bore to Amram: Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam. 60 Aaron was the father of Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 61 But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord. 62 The total number of the Levites registered, all the males a month old or older, was 23,000. They were not counted among the Israelites because they were not given an inheritance among them.

These are the families of the Levites listed by their fathers. 5 From Gershom: his son Libni, his son Jahath, his son Zimmah. 6 His son Joah, his son Iddo, his son Zerah, and his son Jeatherai. 7 The sons of Kohath: Amminadab, his son Korah, his son Assir. 8 His son Elkanah, his son Ebiasaph, and his son Assir. 9 His son Tahath, his son Uriel, his son Uzziah, and his son Shaul. 10 The sons of Elkanah were Amasai and Ahimoth. 11 Elkanah was his son, and his sons were Zophai, his son Nahath. 12 His son Eliab, his son Jeroham, his son Elkanah. 13 The sons of Samuel were Joel, the firstborn, and the second was Abijah. 14 The sons of Merari were Mahli, his son Libni, his son Shimei, his son Uzza. 15 His son Shimea, his son Haggiah, his son Asaiah. 16 These were the men David appointed to lead the singing in the house of the Lord after the ark came to rest. 17 They ministered with music before the tabernacle of the tent of meeting until Solomon built the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. They performed their duties according to the ordinances prescribed for them. 18 These were the men who served, along with their sons. From the Kohathites: Heman the singer, the son of Joel, the son of Samuel. 19 The son of Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Eliel, the son of Toah. 20 The son of Zuph, the son of Elkanah, the son of Mahath, the son of Amasai. 21 The son of Elkanah, the son of Joel, the son of Azariah, the son of Zephaniah. 22 The son of Tahath, the son of Assir, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah. 23 The son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, the son of Israel. 24 And his brother Asaph, who stood at his right hand: Asaph, the son of Berechiah, the son of Shimea. 25 The son of Michael, the son of Baaseiah, the son of Malchijah. 26 The son of Ethni, the son of Zerah, the son of Adaiah. 27 The son of Ethan, the son of Zimmah, the son of Shimei. 28 The son of Jahath, the son of Gershom, the son of Levi. 29 And the sons of Merari, their brothers, were on the left: Ethan, the son of Kishi, the son of Abdi, the son of Malluch. 30 The son of Hashabiah, the son of Amaziah, the son of Hilkiah. 31 The son of Amzi, the son of Bani, the son of Shamer. 32 The son of Mahli, the son of Mushi, the son of Merari, the son of Levi. 33 And their relatives, the Levites, were assigned to all the work of service in the house of God. 34 Aaron and his sons were the ones offering sacrifices on the altar of burnt offering and the altar of incense for all the work of holiness in the most holy place, making atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses, the servant of God, had commanded. 35 These were the sons of Aaron: Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son, Abishua his son. 36 Buki his son, Uzzi his son, Zerahiah his son. 37 Meraioth his son, Amariah his son, Ahitub his son. 38 Zadok his son, Ahimaaz his son. 39 These were their dwelling places, by their encampments within their territory, for the descendants of Aaron, from the family of the Kohathites, since theirs was the first lot. 40 They gave them Hebron in the land of Judah and its surrounding pasturelands. 41 But the fields of the city and its villages were given to Caleb son of Jephunneh. 42 To the descendants of Aaron they gave the cities of refuge: Hebron, Libnah with its pasturelands, Jattir, Eshtemoa with its pasturelands. 43 They also gave Hilez with its pasturelands and Debir with its pasturelands. 44 Ashan with its pasturelands and Beth Shemesh with its pasturelands. 45 And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave Gibeon with its pasturelands, Alemeth with its pasturelands, and Anathoth with its pasturelands—all their cities totaled thirteen, distributed by their clans. 46 To the remaining sons of Kohath, from the family of the tribe, from the half-tribe of Manasseh, they gave ten cities by lot. 47 To the sons of Gershom, for their families, from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, they gave thirteen cities. 48 To the sons of Merari, for their families, from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun, they allotted twelve cities by lot. 49 The sons of Israel gave to the Levites the cities with their surrounding pasturelands. 50 By lot, they gave cities from the tribe of Judah, the tribe of Simeon, and the tribe of Benjamin, naming these specific cities. 51 Through the families of the Kohathites, their territory included cities from the tribe of Ephraim. 52 They gave to them the cities of refuge: Shechem with its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, and Gezer with its pasturelands. 53 Jokmeam with its pasturelands, Beth Horon with its pasturelands. 54 Aijalon with its pasturelands, and Gath Rimmon with its pasturelands. 55 From half the tribe of Manasseh, they gave Aner with its pasturelands and Bileam with its pasturelands for the remaining families of the Kohathites. 56 To the sons of Gershom, from the half-tribe of Manasseh, they gave Golan in Bashan with its pasturelands and Ashtaroth with its pasturelands. 57 From the tribe of Issachar, they gave Kedesh with its pasturelands, Daberath with its pasturelands. 58 Ramoth with its pasturelands, and Anem with its pasturelands. 59 From the tribe of Asher, they gave Mashal with its pasturelands, and Abdon with its pasturelands. 60 Hukok with its pasturelands and Rehob with its pasturelands. 61 From the tribe of Naphtali, they gave Kedesh in Galilee with its pasturelands, Hammon with its pasturelands, and Kiriathaim with its pasturelands. 62 To the remaining sons of Merari, from the tribe of Zebulun, they gave Rimmono with its pasturelands and Tabor with its pasturelands. 63 From beyond the Jordan at Jericho, east of the Jordan, from the tribe of Reuben, they gave Bezer in the desert with its pasturelands and Jahzah with its pasturelands. 64 They also gave Kedemoth with its pasturelands and Mephaath with its pasturelands. 65 From the tribe of Gad, they were given Ramoth in Gilead with its pasturelands, Mahanaim with its pasturelands. 66 They were also given Heshbon with its pasturelands and Jazer with its pasturelands.
- 1 Chr 21:6 : 6 But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the count, because the king’s command was detestable to him.
- Num 8:1-9 : 1 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 Speak to Aaron and tell him: When you set up the lamps, the seven lamps are to give light in front of the lampstand. 3 Aaron did so; he set up the lamps in front of the lampstand, just as the LORD commanded Moses. 4 This is how the lampstand was made: it was a hammered work of gold, from its base to its flowers. It was made of hammered work according to the pattern that the LORD showed Moses. 5 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 6 Take the Levites from among the Israelites and purify them. 7 This is how you will purify them: Sprinkle them with the water of purification, have them shave their entire bodies with a razor, and have them wash their clothes and purify themselves. 8 Then they are to take a young bull with its grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil. You shall also take a second young bull as a sin offering. 9 Bring the Levites to the front of the tent of meeting and assemble the entire Israelite community. 10 You shall bring the Levites before the LORD, and the Israelites shall lay their hands on them. 11 Aaron is to present the Levites before the LORD as a wave offering from the Israelites so that they may perform the service of the LORD. 12 The Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, and you shall offer one of them as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering to the LORD, to make atonement for the Levites. 13 You shall present the Levites before Aaron and his sons and wave them as a wave offering before the LORD. 14 In this way, you are to set the Levites apart from the Israelites, and the Levites will be mine. 15 After this, the Levites may go in to serve at the tent of meeting. You shall purify them and present them as a wave offering. 16 For they are entirely given to me from among the Israelites. I have taken them in place of every firstborn that opens the womb among the Israelites. 17 For every firstborn among the Israelites is mine, whether human or animal. On the day I struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, I set them apart for myself. 18 I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn among the Israelites. 19 I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons from among the Israelites to do the work of the Israelites in the tent of meeting and to make atonement for them, so that no plague will come upon the Israelites when they approach the sanctuary. 20 Moses, Aaron, and the entire Israelite community did with the Levites everything the LORD commanded Moses concerning them. 21 The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes, and Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the LORD. Aaron also made atonement for them to cleanse them. 22 Afterwards, the Levites came to perform their duties in the tent of meeting under the supervision of Aaron and his sons. They did as the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites. 23 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 24 This applies to the Levites: From twenty-five years old and upward, they shall enter to perform the work of the tent of meeting. 25 But at fifty years old, they must retire from regular service and shall no longer work. 26 Instead, they may assist their brothers in performing their duties at the tent of meeting, but they themselves must no longer do the work. This is how you are to assign the Levites to their responsibilities.
- Num 1:3 : 3 You must count all those who are twenty years old or older, who are able to serve in the army of Israel, division by division—you and Aaron together.
- Num 1:50 : 50 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the covenant, all its furnishings, and everything that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, serve it, and camp around it.
