    25 Today he has gone down and sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep in abundance. He has invited all the king's sons, the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Right now they are eating and drinking with him, and they are saying, 'Long live King Adonijah!'

    26 But me—your servant—and Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon, he did not invite.

    27 Is this decision from my lord the king, without letting your servants know who is to sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?"

    28 King David responded, "Call Bathsheba to me." So she came into the king's presence and stood before him.

    43 Jonathan replied to Adonijah, "No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king.

    44 The king sent Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites with him, and they have placed him on the king's mule.

    45 Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon. They have gone up from there rejoicing, and the city is in an uproar. That is the noise you heard.

    46 Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne.

    17 He continued, 'Please ask King Solomon—he will not refuse you—to give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.'

    18 'Very well,' Bathsheba replied. 'I will speak to the king for you.'

    19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah. The king rose to meet her, bowed down to her, and then sat on his throne. He also had a throne placed for the king’s mother, and she sat at his right hand.

    20 She said, 'I have one small request to make of you. Do not refuse me.' The king replied, 'Ask, my mother, for I will not refuse you.'

    21 So she said, 'Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to your brother Adonijah as his wife.'

    22 King Solomon answered his mother, 'Why do you request Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? You might as well request the kingdom for him—for he is my elder brother—yes, for him and for Abiathar the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah!'

    23 Then King Solomon took an oath by the LORD: 'May God punish me ever so severely if Adonijah has not made this request at the cost of his own life!

    30 I will carry out today what I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel, saying: 'Your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.'

    31 Then Bathsheba bowed down with her face to the ground to pay homage to the king and said, "May my lord King David live forever!"

    32 King David said, "Call Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada to me." When they came before the king,

    33 the king said to them, "Take my servants with you, have Solomon my son ride on my own mule, and escort him down to Gihon.

    34 There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet are to anoint him king over Israel. Blow the ram's horn and declare, 'Long live King Solomon!'

    35 You are to go up with him, and he is to sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.'
