  • Gen 34:2-9 : 2 And Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. He seized her, lay with her, and violated her. 3 But his heart was deeply attached to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her. 4 Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife." 5 Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah, but his sons were in the fields with the livestock, so Jacob kept silent until they came back. 6 Then Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out to Jacob to speak with him. 7 Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields when they heard, and the men were grieved and very angry, because this outrageous act had been done in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter—something that should not be done. 8 Hamor spoke with them, saying, "My son Shechem has set his heart on your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife. 9 Make marriages with us: give your daughters to us and take our daughters for yourselves. 10 You can dwell with us, and the land will be open to you: live, trade in it, and acquire property here. 11 Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you ask of me, I will give. 12 Set the bride price and gift as high as you like, and I will pay whatever you ask me; just give me the young woman as a wife." 13 But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor with deceit, because Shechem had defiled their sister Dinah. 14 They said to them, "We cannot do this thing—to give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us. 15 However, we will agree to you on one condition: if you become like us by every male among you being circumcised. 16 Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves; we will dwell among you and become one people. 17 But if you will not listen to us and get circumcised, we will take our daughter and leave. 18 Their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son. 19 The young man did not delay in doing the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. Now he was the most respected of all his father’s household. 20 Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying: 21 "These men are at peace with us. Let them dwell in the land and trade in it, for the land is spacious enough for them. Let us take their daughters as wives, and let us give them our daughters. 22 Only on this condition will the men agree to live with us and become one people: every male among us must be circumcised, just as they are. 23 Won't their livestock, their property, and all their animals be ours? Only let us agree to them, and they will dwell with us." 24 All who went out of the gate of the city listened to Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised—all who went out of the gate of the city. 25 On the third day, when they were in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword, came against the city undetected, and killed every male. 26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword and took Dinah from Shechem's house and left. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and plundered the city because their sister had been defiled. 28 They took their flocks, herds, donkeys, and everything in the city and in the fields. 29 They carried off all their wealth, their children, and their wives, taking everything in the houses as plunder. 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me odious to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. We are few in number. If they join forces against me and attack me, my household and I will be destroyed." 31 But they replied, "Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?"
