  • Deut 33:1-9 : 1 This is the blessing that Moses, the man of God, gave to the Israelites before his death. 2 He said: 'The Lord came from Sinai, and shone forth from Seir to them; He appeared in radiance from Mount Paran, and came with myriads of holy ones. From His right hand came a fiery law for them. 3 Indeed, He loves the peoples; all His holy ones are in Your hand. They are gathered at Your feet, and they receive Your words. 4 The law that Moses commanded us is a heritage for the congregation of Jacob. 5 He became king in Jeshurun when the heads of the people gathered, all the tribes of Israel together. 6 May Reuben live and not die, and may his men be few in number. 7 This is for Judah: He said, 'Hear, Lord, the voice of Judah; bring him to his people. With his own hands he defends, and You will be a help against his adversaries.' 8 Of Levi he said: 'Your Thummim and Urim belong to Your faithful one, whom You tested at Massah and contended with at the waters of Meribah. 9 He said of his father and mother, "I do not regard them;" he did not acknowledge his brothers or recognize his children, for they kept Your word and guarded Your covenant. 10 They will teach Your judgments to Jacob and Your law to Israel; they will offer incense before You and whole burnt offerings on Your altar. 11 Lord, bless his strength and accept the work of his hands. Crush the loins of his adversaries and those who hate him, so they do not rise again. 12 Of Benjamin he said: 'The beloved of the Lord will dwell securely beside Him; the Lord shields him all day long, and he rests between His shoulders.' 13 Of Joseph he said: 'May his land be blessed by the Lord with the choicest gifts of heaven, with the dew and the waters lying beneath.' 14 With the choicest fruits of the sun, and the rich yield of the months, 15 With the best from the ancient mountains and the precious things from the everlasting hills, 16 With the choicest gifts of the earth and its fullness, and with the favor of Him who dwelt in the burning bush. May these rest on the head of Joseph, on the crown of the prince among his brothers. 17 His majesty is like a firstborn bull, and his horns are like the horns of a wild ox. With them he gores the peoples, all the way to the ends of the earth. Such are the myriads of Ephraim, and such are the thousands of Manasseh. 18 Of Zebulun he said: 'Rejoice, Zebulun, in your journeys, and Issachar, in your tents.' 19 They will summon peoples to the mountain, where they will offer righteous sacrifices; for they will draw from the abundance of the seas and the treasures hidden in the sand. 20 Of Gad he said: 'Blessed is he who enlarges Gad's territory. Gad dwells like a lion at rest, tearing arm and scalp.' 21 He chose the best for himself, for there the lawgiver's portion was reserved; he came with the leaders of the people. He carried out the righteousness of the Lord and His judgments for Israel. 22 Of Dan he said: 'Dan is a lion’s cub, springing out of Bashan.' 23 Of Naphtali he said: 'Naphtali is abounding with favor and full of the Lord's blessing; he will take possession of the sea and the south.' 24 Of Asher he said: 'Asher is most blessed of sons; let him be favored by his brothers, and let him bathe his feet in oil.' 25 The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze, and your strength will last as long as your days. 26 There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens to help you and on the clouds in His majesty. 27 The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemies before you, saying, 'Destroy them!' 28 So Israel will live in safety, isolated in a land of grain and new wine, where the heavens drop dew. 29 Blessed are you, Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will come cringing to you, and you will tread on their high places.

  • Gen 29:32-35 : 32 Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him Reuben, for she said, 'Because the LORD has seen my misery, surely now my husband will love me.' 33 She conceived again and gave birth to a son, and she said, 'Because the LORD heard that I am unloved, He has given me this one too.' So she named him Simeon. 34 She conceived again and gave birth to a son and said, 'Now at this time my husband will be attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.' Therefore, he was named Levi. 35 She conceived yet again and gave birth to a son and said, 'This time I will praise the LORD.' Therefore, she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children.
  • Gen 30:5-9 : 5 Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. 6 Then Rachel said, 'God has judged in my favor; He has listened to my plea and given me a son.' So she named him Dan. 7 Rachel’s maidservant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. 8 Then Rachel said, 'I have struggled greatly with my sister and I have prevailed.' So she named him Naphtali. 9 When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing children, she took her maidservant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife. 10 And Leah’s maidservant Zilpah bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, 'What good fortune!' So she named him Gad. 12 Leah’s maidservant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 Then Leah said, 'How happy I am! The women will call me blessed.' So she named him Asher. 14 During the wheat harvest, Reuben went out and found some mandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, 'Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.' 15 But Leah said to her, 'Isn’t it enough that you took my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?' Rachel said, 'Very well, he can sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.' 16 When Jacob came in from the field that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, 'You must come to me tonight, for I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.' So he slept with her that night. 17 God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Then Leah said, 'God has rewarded me because I gave my servant to my husband.' So she named him Issachar. 19 Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 Then Leah said, 'God has endowed me with a wonderful gift. This time my husband will honor me because I have borne him six sons.' So she named him Zebulun.
  • Gen 35:17-26 : 17 During her hard labor, the midwife said to her, "Don’t be afraid, for you have another son!" 18 As her life was slipping away, because she was dying, she named him Ben-Oni, but his father called him Benjamin. 19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 Jacob set up a pillar on her grave; that pillar marks Rachel's grave to this day. 21 Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder. 22 While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went and slept with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard about it. Now Jacob had twelve sons: 23 The sons of Leah: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. 24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. 25 The sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s servant: Dan and Naphtali. 26 The sons of Zilpah, Leah’s servant, were Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-Aram.
  • Gen 46:8-9 : 8 These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, his firstborn being Reuben. 9 The sons of Reuben were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 10 The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul—the son of a Canaanite woman. 11 The sons of Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 12 The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah. However, Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 13 The sons of Issachar were Tola, Puvah, Job, and Shimron. 14 The sons of Zebulun were Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. 15 These were the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram, along with his daughter Dinah. Altogether, the number of Leah's descendants, including sons and daughters, was thirty-three. 16 The sons of Gad were Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. 17 The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah, as well as their sister Serah. The sons of Beriah were Heber and Malkiel. 18 These were the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah. She bore these to Jacob—sixteen in all. 19 The sons of Rachel, Jacob’s wife, were Joseph and Benjamin. 20 In the land of Egypt, Joseph’s two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, were born to him by Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On. 21 The sons of Benjamin were Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. 22 These were the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob—fourteen in all. 23 The sons of Dan: Hushim. 24 The sons of Naphtali were Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.
  • Gen 49:1-9 : 1 Then Jacob called for his sons and said, 'Gather together so that I may tell you what will happen to you in the days to come.' 2 'Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob; listen to Israel, your father.' 3 'Reuben, you are my firstborn, my strength, and the first of my vigor, excelling in dignity and excelling in power.' 4 'Unstable as water, you will no longer excel, for you went up onto your father's bed; you defiled it—he went up onto my couch.' 5 'Simeon and Levi are brothers; their swords are weapons of violence.' 6 'Let me not enter their council; let me not join their assembly, for in their anger they killed men, and in their self-will they hamstrung oxen.' 7 'Cursed be their anger, so fierce, and their fury, so cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.' 8 'Judah, your brothers will praise you; your hand will be on the neck of your enemies, and your father's sons will bow down to you.' 9 'Judah is a lion's cub; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stoops down, he crouches like a lion, and like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? 10 'The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come, and the obedience of the peoples shall be his.' 11 'He ties his foal to the vine, his donkey's colt to the choice vine; he washes his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes.' 12 'His eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk.' 13 'Zebulun will live by the seashore and become a haven for ships; his border will extend toward Sidon.' 14 'Issachar is a strong donkey lying down between two burdens.' 15 'When he sees how good his resting place is, and how pleasant the land is, he will bend his shoulder to the burden and submit to forced labor.' 16 Dan will provide justice for his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. 17 Dan will be a serpent by the roadside, a viper along the path, that bites the horse's heels so that its rider falls backward. 18 I wait for your salvation, Lord. 19 Gad will be attacked by a band of raiders, but he will attack them at their heels. 20 Asher's food will be rich, and he will provide delicacies fit for a king. 21 Naphtali is a doe set free that bears beautiful words. 22 Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine near a spring, whose branches climb over a wall. 23 With bitterness, archers attacked him; they shot at him with hostility. 24 But his bow remained steady, and his strong arms stayed limber, because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel. 25 Because of the God of your father, who helps you, because of the Almighty, who blesses you with blessings of the heavens above, blessings of the deep that lies below, blessings of the breast and womb. 26 The blessings of your father are greater than the blessings of the ancient mountains, than the bounty of the age-old hills. Let all these rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the prince among his brothers. 27 Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; in the morning he devours the prey, in the evening he divides the plunder. 28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing appropriate to him. 29 Then he gave them these instructions: 'I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite. 30 The cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite. 31 There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried, and there I buried Leah. 32 The field and the cave that is in it were purchased from the sons of Heth. 33 When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.
