  • 1 Chr 18:1-9 : 1 Now after this, it came to pass that David struck the Philistines and subdued them, and took Gath and its towns out of the hand of the Philistines. 2 And he struck Moab; and the Moabites became David's servants and brought gifts. 3 And David struck Hadadezer king of Zobah as far as Hamath, as he went to establish his dominion by the river Euphrates. 4 And David took from him a thousand chariots, seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers; David also hamstrung all the chariot horses, but reserved a hundred chariots of them. 5 And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David killed twenty-two thousand men of the Syrians. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became David's servants and brought gifts. Thus the LORD preserved David wherever he went. 7 And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 Likewise, from Tibhath and from Chun, cities of Hadadezer, David brought a great deal of bronze, with which Solomon made the bronze sea, the pillars, and the vessels of bronze. 9 Now when Tou king of Hamath heard how David had defeated all the army of Hadadezer king of Zobah, 10 he sent Hadoram his son to king David, to ask about his welfare and to congratulate him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him; for Hadadezer had waged war with Tou; and he brought with him all kinds of vessels of gold, silver, and bronze. 11 These also king David dedicated to the LORD, along with the silver and the gold that he brought from all these nations: from Edom and from Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek. 12 Moreover, Abishai the son of Zeruiah slew eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. 13 And he put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David's servants. Thus the LORD preserved David wherever he went. 14 So David reigned over all Israel, and executed judgment and justice among all his people. 15 And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder. 16 And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Abimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Shavsha was scribe. 17 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were chief officials around the king.

Then David's men swore to him, saying, You shall no more go out with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel. 18 After this, there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob. Then Sibbechai the Hushathite killed Saph, who was of the descendants of the giant. 19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan, the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear's staff was like a weaver's beam. 20 And there was another battle in Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had on each hand six fingers, and on each foot six toes, twenty-four in number; and he also was born to the giant. 21 And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea, David's brother, killed him. 22 These four were born to the giant in Gath and fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.
