14But now your kingdom will not continue! The LORD has sought out for himself a man who is loyal to him and the LORD has appointed him to be leader over his people, for you have not obeyed what the LORD commanded you.”
30Saul again replied,“I have sinned. But please honor me before the elders of my people and before Israel. Go back with me so I may worship the LORD your God.”
31So Samuel followed Saul back, and Saul worshiped the LORD.
35The LORD made a covenant with them and instructed them,“You must not worship other gods. Do not bow down to them, serve them, or offer sacrifices to them.
16The people responded,“Far be it from us to abandon the LORD so we can worship other gods!
4You must follow the LORD your God and revere only him; and you must observe his commandments, obey him, serve him, and remain loyal to him.
19But today you have rejected your God who saves you from all your trouble and distress. You have said,“No! Appoint a king over us.” Now take your positions before the LORD by your tribes and by your clans.’”

20If you abandon the LORD and worship foreign gods, he will turn against you; he will bring disaster on you and destroy you, though he once treated you well.”
21So Samuel listened to everything the people said and then reported it to the LORD.
22The LORD said to Samuel,“Do as they say and install a king over them.” Then Samuel said to the men of Israel,“Each of you go back to his own city.”
14Now obey the LORD and worship him with integrity and loyalty. Put aside the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt and worship the LORD.

12An Exhortation to Love Both God and People Now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you except to revere him, to obey all his commandments, to love him, to serve him with all your mind and being,
5He said through them,‘Each of you must turn from your wicked ways and stop doing the evil things you are doing. If you do, I will allow you to continue to live here in the land that I gave to you and your ancestors as a lasting possession.
17However, if you turn aside and do not obey, but are lured away to worship and serve other gods,
8Now, don’t be stubborn like your fathers! Submit to the LORD and come to his sanctuary which he has permanently consecrated. Serve the LORD your God so that he might relent from his raging anger.
13When Samuel came to Saul, Saul said to him,“May the LORD bless you! I have fulfilled the LORD’s orders.”
6“But if you or your sons ever turn away from me, fail to obey the regulations and rules I instructed you to keep, and decide to serve and worship other gods,
19But the people refused to heed Samuel’s warning. Instead they said,“No! There will be a king over us!
12Saul Is Established as King Then the people said to Samuel,“Who were the ones asking,‘Will Saul reign over us?’ Hand over those men so we may execute them!”
11Thus all Israel will hear and be afraid; no longer will they continue to do evil like this among you.
10Then they cried out to the LORD and admitted,‘We have sinned, for we have forsaken the LORD and have served the Baals and the images of Ashtoreth. Now deliver us from the hand of our enemies so that we may serve you.’
18So Samuel told him everything. He did not hold back anything from him. Eli said,“The LORD will do what he pleases.”
10I said to you,“I am the LORD your God! Do not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are now living!” But you have disobeyed me.’”
