16When I looked, you had indeed sinned against the LORD your God and had cast for yourselves a metal calf; you had quickly turned aside from the way he had commanded you!
34According to the number of the days you have investigated this land, forty days– one day for a year– you will suffer for your iniquities, forty years, and you will know what it means to thwart me.
32However, through all this you did not have confidence in the LORD your God,
33the one who would go before you on the way to find places for you to camp, appearing in a fire at night and in a cloud by day to show you the way you ought to go.
34Judgment at Kadesh Barnea When the LORD heard you, he became angry and made this vow:
26“Nonetheless they grew disobedient and rebelled against you; they disregarded your law. They killed your prophets who had solemnly admonished them in order to cause them to return to you. They committed atrocious blasphemies.
16“But they– our ancestors– behaved presumptuously; they rebelled and did not obey your commandments.
17They refused to obey and did not recall your miracles that you had performed among them. Instead, they rebelled and appointed a leader to return to their bondage in Egypt. But you are a God of forgiveness, merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and unfailing in your loyal love. You did not abandon them,
18even when they made a cast image of a calf for themselves and said,‘This is your God who brought you up from Egypt,’ or when they committed atrocious blasphemies.
7We have behaved corruptly against you, not obeying the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments that you commanded your servant Moses.
9“There your fathers tested me and tried me, and they saw my works for forty years.
12And he said to me,“Get up, go down at once from here because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have sinned! They have quickly turned from the way I commanded them and have made for themselves a cast metal image.”
13Moreover, he said to me,“I have taken note of these people; they are a stubborn lot!
29For I know that after I die you will totally corrupt yourselves and turn away from the path I have commanded you to walk. Disaster will confront you in the days to come because you will act wickedly before the LORD, inciting him to anger because of your actions.”
37As for me, the LORD was also angry with me on your account. He said,“You also will not be able to go there.
2Remember the whole way by which he has brought you these forty years through the wilderness so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not.
8You did not hear, you do not know, you were not told beforehand. For I know that you are very deceitful; you were labeled a rebel from birth.
9For these are rebellious people– they are lying children, children unwilling to obey the LORD’s law.
51for both of you rebelled against me among the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin when you did not show me proper respect among the Israelites.
7For I solemnly warned your ancestors to obey me. I warned them again and again, ever since I delivered them out of Egypt until this very day.
41But Moses said,“Why are you now transgressing the commandment of the LORD? It will not succeed!
14Now look, you are standing in your fathers’ place, a brood of sinners, to increase still further the fierce wrath of the LORD against the Israelites.
9I also said to you at that time,“I am no longer able to sustain you by myself.
15But if you don’t obey the LORD and rebel against what the LORD says, the hand of the LORD will be against both you and your king.
29“Why do you try to refute me? All of you have rebelled against me,” says the LORD.
8Your fathers did the same thing when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.
8They have quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them– they have made for themselves a molten calf and have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and said,‘These are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt.’”
9Then the LORD said to Moses:“I have seen this people. Look what a stiff-necked people they are!
2Bear in mind today that I am not speaking to your children who have not personally experienced the judgments of the LORD your God, which revealed his greatness, strength, and power.
23But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts. They have turned aside and gone their own way.
29Your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness– all those of you who were numbered, according to your full number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me.
5I cared for you in the wilderness, in the dry desert where no water was.
1Every Effect has its Cause Listen, you Israelites, to this message which the LORD is proclaiming against you! This message is for the entire clan I brought up from the land of Egypt:
19Then we left Horeb and passed through all that immense, forbidding wilderness that you saw on the way to the Amorite hill country as the LORD our God had commanded us to do, finally arriving at Kadesh Barnea.
30But as for you and your servants, I know that you do not yet fear the LORD God.”
