The LORD spoke to Moses:“Go quickly, descend, because your people, whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, have acted corruptly.

    1The Sin of the Golden Calf When the people saw that Moses delayed in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him,“Get up, make us gods that will go before us. As for this fellow Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him!”

    2So Aaron said to them,“Break off the gold earrings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.”

    19When he approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses became extremely angry. He threw the tablets from his hands and broke them to pieces at the bottom of the mountain.

    20He took the calf they had made and burned it in the fire, ground it to powder, poured it out on the water, and made the Israelites drink it.

    21Moses said to Aaron,“What did this people do to you, that you have brought on them so great a sin?”

    22Aaron said,“Do not let your anger burn hot, my lord; you know these people, that they tend to evil.

    23They said to me,‘Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this fellow Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.’

    24So I said to them,‘Whoever has gold, break it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.”

    25Moses saw that the people were running wild, for Aaron had let them get completely out of control, causing derision from their enemies.

    23Moses said to the LORD,“The people are not able to come up to Mount Sinai, because you solemnly warned us,‘Set boundaries for the mountain and set it apart.’”

    24The LORD said to him,“Go, get down, and come up, and Aaron with you, but do not let the priests and the people force their way through to come up to the LORD, lest he break through against them.”

    25So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.

  • 20The Fourth Blow: Flies The LORD said to Moses,“Get up early in the morning and position yourself before Pharaoh as he goes out to the water, and tell him,‘This is what the LORD has said,“Release my people that they may serve me!

  • 15For if you turn away from following him, he will once again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will be the reason for their destruction.”

  • 7We have behaved corruptly against you, not obeying the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments that you commanded your servant Moses.

  • 5His people have been unfaithful to him; they have not acted like his children– this is their sin. They are a perverse and deceitful generation.

  • 11The Punishment from God The LORD said to Moses,“How long will this people despise me, and how long will they not believe in me, in spite of the signs that I have done among them?

  • 25Then people will say,“Because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.

  • 17Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their place at the foot of the mountain.
