For the LORD had said to Moses,“Tell the Israelites,‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I went up among you for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments, that I may know what I should do to you.’”

    1The Sin of the Golden Calf When the people saw that Moses delayed in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him,“Get up, make us gods that will go before us. As for this fellow Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him!”

    2So Aaron said to them,“Break off the gold earrings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.”

    3So all the people broke off the gold earrings that were on their ears and brought them to Aaron.

  • 34But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he would remove the veil until he came out. Then he would come out and tell the Israelites what he had been commanded.

  • 25Moses saw that the people were running wild, for Aaron had let them get completely out of control, causing derision from their enemies.

  • 7I said to them,“Each of you must get rid of the detestable idols you keep before you, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am the LORD your God.”

  • 6and you will be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you will speak to the Israelites.”

  • 9The LORD said to Moses,“I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you and so that they will always believe in you.” And Moses told the words of the people to the LORD.

  • 13Moses said to the LORD,“When the Egyptians hear it– for you brought up this people by your power from among them–

  • 16When I looked, you had indeed sinned against the LORD your God and had cast for yourselves a metal calf; you had quickly turned aside from the way he had commanded you!

  • 18Now today you dare to turn back from following the LORD! You are rebelling today against the LORD; tomorrow he may break out in anger against the entire community of Israel.

  • 23Then Moses spoke to the Israelites and they brought the one who cursed outside the camp and stoned him with stones. So the Israelites did just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

  • 2Instruct the people that each man and each woman is to request from his or her neighbor items of silver and gold.”

  • 2Moses alone may come near the LORD, but the others must not come near, nor may the people go up with him.”

  • 5Then Moses and Aaron fell down with their faces to the ground before the whole assembled community of the Israelites.

  • 30The next day Moses said to the people,“You have committed a very serious sin, but now I will go up to the LORD– perhaps I can make atonement on behalf of your sin.”
