Now after that she had ceased to cry unto the God of Israel, and bad made an end of all these words.

She rose where she had fallen down, and called her maid, and went down into the house in the which she abode in the sabbath days, and in her feast days,

Hun tok av seg sekkestrien hun hadde på, la bort sørgeklærne sine, vasket kroppen sin overalt med vann, salvet seg med kostbar salve, flettet håret sitt og satt en turban på hodet, og tok på seg festklærne sine, som hun hadde båret mens Manasses, ektemannen hennes, levde.

And pulled off the sackcloth which she had on, and put off the garments of her widowhood, and washed her body all over with water, and anointed herself with precious ointment, and braided the hair of her head, and put on a tire upon it, and put on her garments of gladness, wherewith she was clad during the life of Manasses her husband.

Hun tok sandaler på føttene, smykker på armene, kjeder, ringer og øredobber, alle sine prydelser, og pyntet seg vakkert for å lokke blikkene til alle menn som skulle se henne.

And she took sandals upon her feet, and put about her her bracelets, and her chains, and her rings, and her earrings, and all her ornaments, and decked herself bravely, to allure the eyes of all men that should see her.

Så ga hun tjenestejenta si en flaske vin og en krukke med olje, fylte en sekk med ristet korn, fikenkaker og fint brød; alt dette pakket hun sammen og la det på henne.

Then she gave her maid a bottle of wine, and a cruse of oil, and filled a bag with parched corn, and lumps of figs, and with fine bread; so she folded all these things together, and laid them upon her.

Så de dro til byporten i Betulya og fant at Ozia og de eldste i byen, Kabri og Karmis, sto der.

Thus they went forth to the gate of the city of Bethulia, and found standing there Ozias and the ancients of the city, Chabris and Charmis.

Og når de så henne, fordi hennes utseende var forandret og klærne var byttet, undret de seg stort over hennes skjønnhet, og sa til henne:

And when they saw her, that her countenance was altered, and her apparel was changed, they wondered at her beauty very greatly, and said unto her.

Gud, våre fedres Gud, gi deg gunst og fullfør dine foretak til ære for Israels barn og til opphøyelse av Jerusalem. Så tilba de Gud.

The God, the God of our fathers give thee favour, and accomplish thine enterprizes to the glory of the children of Israel, and to the exaltation of Jerusalem. Then they worshipped God.

Og hun sa til dem: Beordre at byens porter åpnes for meg, så jeg kan gå ut for å oppfylle det dere har snakket med meg om. Så beordret de de unge mennene å åpne for henne, som hun hadde sagt.

And she said unto them, Command the gates of the city to be opened unto me, that I may go forth to accomplish the things whereof ye have spoken with me. So they commanded the young men to open unto her, as she had spoken.

Og da de hadde gjort det, gikk Judit ut, og tjenestejenta med henne; og mennene i byen så etter henne, til hun hadde gått ned fjellet og passert dalen, og de så henne ikke mer.

And when they had done so, Judith went out, she, and her maid with her; and the men of the city looked after her, until she was gone down the mountain, and till she had passed the valley, and could see her no more.

Så gikk de rett frem i dalen: og Assyrernes første vaktpost møtte henne.

Thus they went straight forth in the valley: and the first watch of the Assyrians met her,

Og de tok henne og spurte henne, Hvilket folk tilhører du? og hvor kommer du fra? og hvor går du hen? Og hun svarte: Jeg er en kvinne av hebreerne, og har flyktet fra dem: for de skal bli gitt til dere for å bli fortært.

And took her, and asked her, Of what people art thou? and whence comest thou? and whither goest thou? And she said, I am a woman of the Hebrews, and am fled from them: for they shall be given you to be consumed:

Og jeg kommer før Holofernes, lederen for hæren deres, for å fortelle sanne ord; og jeg vil vise ham en vei, hvorved han skal gå og vinne hele fjellområdet, uten å miste liv eller helse til noen av sine menn.

And I am coming before Holofernes the chief captain of your army, to declare words of truth; and I will shew him a way, whereby he shall go, and win all the hill country, without losing the body or life of any one of his men.

Nå, når mennene hørte hennes ord og så hennes ansikt, undret de seg stort over hennes skjønnhet og sa til henne:

Now when the men heard her words, and beheld her countenance, they wondered greatly at her beauty, and said unto her,

Du har reddet ditt liv ved å skynde deg å komme til vår herres nærvær: nå derfor kom til hans telt, og noen av oss skal følge deg til de har overlevert deg i hans hender.

Thou hast saved thy life, in that thou hast hasted to come down to the presence of our lord: now therefore come to his tent, and some of us shall conduct thee, until they have delivered thee to his hands.

Og når du står foran ham, vær ikke redd i ditt hjerte, men fortell ham i henhold til dine ord; og han vil behandle deg godt.

And when thou standest before him, be not afraid in thine heart, but shew unto him according to thy word; and he will entreat thee well.

Så valgte de ut av seg hundre menn til å følge henne og tjenestejenta; og de førte henne til Holofernes’ telt.

Then they chose out of them an hundred men to accompany her and her maid; and they brought her to the tent of Holofernes.

Da var det en oppstandelse i hele leiren: for hennes komme ble kunngjort blant teltene, og de kom omkring henne, mens hun sto utenfor Holofernes’ telt, inntil de fortalte ham om henne.

Then was there a concourse throughout all the camp: for her coming was noised among the tents, and they came about her, as she stood without the tent of Holofernes, till they told him of her.

Og de undret seg over hennes skjønnhet, og beundret Israels barn på grunn av henne, og enhver sa til sin nabo: Hvem vil forakte dette folket, som har slike kvinner blant seg? Sannelig, det er ikke godt at en eneste av dem blir stående som ved å la gå kan bedra hele jorden.

And they wondered at her beauty, and admired the children of Israel because of her, and every one said to his neighbour, Who would despise this people, that have among them such women? surely it is not good that one man of them be left who being let go might deceive the whole earth.

Og de som lå nær Holofernes, gikk ut, og alle hans tjenere, og de brakte henne inn i teltet.

And they that lay near Holofernes went out, and all his servants and they brought her into the tent.

Nå hvilte Holofernes på sengen sin under en baldakin, som var vevd med purpur, og gull, og smaragder, og edelstener.

Now Holofernes rested upon his bed under a canopy, which was woven with purple, and gold, and emeralds, and precious stones.

Så fortalte de ham om henne; og han kom ut foran sitt telt med sølvlampene foran seg.

So they shewed him of her; and he came out before his tent with silver lamps going before him.

Og når Judit kom frem for ham og hans tjenere, undret de alle seg over skjønnheten av hennes ansikt; og hun falt ned på sitt ansikt og gjorde ære til ham: og hans tjenere løftet henne opp.

And when Judith was come before him and his servants they all marvelled at the beauty of her countenance; and she fell down upon her face, and did reverence unto him: and his servants took her up.
