  • 1 Kgs 1:39-2:4 : 39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the sacred tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the ram's horn, and all the people shouted, "Long live King Solomon!" 40 All the people went up after him, playing flutes and rejoicing with such great joy that the ground shook from the sound. 41 Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard the sound as they finished their meal. When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he asked, "Why is there such a commotion in the city?" 42 While he was still speaking, Jonathan, son of Abiathar the priest, arrived. Adonijah said, "Come in, for you are a worthy man, and surely you bring good news." 43 Jonathan replied to Adonijah, "No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king. 44 The king sent Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites with him, and they have placed him on the king's mule. 45 Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon. They have gone up from there rejoicing, and the city is in an uproar. That is the noise you heard. 46 Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne. 47 The king's servants have also come to bless our lord King David, saying, 'May your God make Solomon's name more famous than yours and his throne greater than yours!' And the king bowed on his bed in worship. 48 And the king said, 'Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has allowed one of my descendants to sit on my throne today, and my own eyes have seen it.'" 49 At this, all the guests who were with Adonijah were terrified; they got up and scattered, each going his own way. 50 But Adonijah, fearing Solomon, went and took hold of the horns of the altar. 51 It was reported to Solomon, "Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon and has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, 'Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death by the sword.'" 52 Solomon replied, "If he proves himself to be a man of integrity, not a single hair of his head will fall to the ground. But if evil is found in him, he will die." 53 So King Solomon sent men, and they brought Adonijah down from the altar. He came and bowed to King Solomon, who said to him, "Go to your home." 1 As David's final days approached, he commanded his son Solomon, saying: 2 I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, therefore, and show yourself to be a man. 3 Obey the charge of the LORD your God by walking in His ways, keeping His statutes, commandments, judgments, and testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses. In this way, you will prosper in all you do and wherever you turn. 4 And you will ensure that the LORD fulfills His promise to me, saying, 'If your sons are careful to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.'
