    18King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, who was in charge of forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam managed to get into his chariot and flee to Jerusalem.

    18So the Lord became very angry with Israel and removed them from His presence. Only the tribe of Judah was left.

    19But even Judah did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God. They followed the practices of Israel as the Israelites had done.

    20Therefore the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel, afflicted them, and handed them over to plunderers until He had cast them out of His presence.

    21For when Israel was torn from the house of David, they made Jeroboam son of Nebat king. Jeroboam drove Israel away from following the Lord and led them into great sin.

    22The Israelites persisted in all the sins Jeroboam committed and did not turn away from them.

    23Finally, the Lord removed Israel from His presence as He had declared through all His servants the prophets. So the Israelites were exiled from their own land to Assyria, and they remain there to this day.

    26Jeroboam said to himself, "The kingdom will now likely return to the house of David.

    27If these people go up to worship at the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam of Judah.

    1Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all of Israel had come to Shechem to crown him king.

    2When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about this—he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon—he remained in Egypt.

    3They sent for him, and Jeroboam and the entire assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam.

    13But the king answered the people harshly, rejecting the advice given to him by the elders.

    24This is what the LORD says: You shall not march up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Return home, for this is my doing." So they obeyed the word of the LORD and went back as the LORD had commanded.
