    26Then the watchman saw another man running, and he called to the gatekeeper, 'Look, another man is running alone!' The king said, 'He too brings news.'

    27The watchman said, 'It seems to me the running of the first man is like that of Ahimaaz son of Zadok.' 'He is a good man,' the king said, 'and he comes with good news.'

    28Then Ahimaaz called out to the king, 'All is well!' He bowed down with his face to the ground before the king and said, 'Praise be to the Lord your God! He has delivered up the men who raised their hands against my lord the king.'

    29The king asked, 'Is the young man Absalom safe?' Ahimaaz answered, 'I saw a great commotion when Joab sent the king’s servant and me, but I do not know what it was.'

    30The king said, 'Stand aside and wait here.' So he stepped aside and stood there.

    31Then the Cushite arrived and said, 'My lord the king, hear the good news! Today the Lord has vindicated you by delivering you from the hand of all who rose up against you.'

    32The king asked the Cushite, 'Is the young man Absalom safe?' The Cushite replied, 'May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rise against you to harm you end up like that young man.'

    9So the king got up and sat in the gateway. When the people were told, "The king is sitting in the gateway," they all came before him. Meanwhile, the Israelites fled to their homes.

    1The king was deeply moved and went up to the upper room over the gate and wept. As he went, he said, "My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died in your place, Absalom, my son, my son!"

    36As he finished speaking, the king’s sons arrived, weeping loudly. The king and all his servants also wept bitterly.

    37Absalom fled and went to Talmai son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. David mourned for his son every day.

    14Joab said, 'I cannot linger here with you.' So he took three spears in his hand and thrust them into Absalom’s heart while he was still alive, hanging in the oak tree.

    15Ten of Joab’s young armor-bearers surrounded Absalom, struck him, and killed him.
