    12Abner son of Ner and the servants of Ish-bosheth son of Saul went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

    13Joab son of Zeruiah and David's servants also went out and met them by the pool of Gibeon. They sat down, one group on one side of the pool and the other group on the opposite side.

    14Then Abner said to Joab, 'Let the young men come forward and compete before us.' And Joab said, 'Let them come forward.'

    15So they stood up and were counted—twelve from Benjamin and from the followers of Ish-bosheth son of Saul, and twelve from the servants of David.

    16Each man seized his opponent by the head and thrust his sword into his opponent’s side, and they fell together. So the place was called the Field of Flints, which is in Gibeon.

    17The battle that day was fierce, and Abner and the men of Israel were defeated by the servants of David.

    18The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel was as swift on foot as a gazelle in the open field.

    19Asahel pursued Abner, turning neither to the right nor to the left as he chased him.

    20Then Abner turned and said, 'Is that you, Asahel?' He answered, 'It is I.'

    21Abner said to him, 'Turn aside to your right or to your left; seize one of the young men and take his armor.' But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.

    22Again Abner said to Asahel, 'Turn aside from following me. Why should I strike you down? How could I then show my face to your brother Joab?'

    23But Asahel refused to turn aside. So Abner struck him in the stomach with the butt of his spear, and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot. And all who came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died stood still.

    22Just then, David’s men and Joab returned from a raid, bringing a large amount of plunder, but Abner was no longer with David in Hebron, for David had sent him away in peace.

    23When Joab and all the soldiers who were with him arrived, they were told, 'Abner son of Ner came to the king, and the king sent him away in peace.'

    24So Joab went to the king and said, 'What have you done? Look, Abner came to you. Why did you let him go? Now he is gone!'

    25'You know Abner son of Ner! He came to deceive you and to learn about your comings and goings and everything you are doing.'

    26Joab then left David and sent messengers after Abner, who brought him back from the cistern at Sirah. But David knew nothing about it.

    27When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside inside the gate, as if to speak with him privately, and there he struck him in the belly, killing him in revenge for the blood of his brother Asahel.

    28Later, when David heard about this, he declared, 'I and my kingdom are forever innocent before the LORD regarding the blood of Abner son of Ner.

    13After he was removed from the road, everyone continued on after Joab to pursue Sheba, son of Bichri.

    14Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel Beth Maacah, and all the Berites assembled and followed him.

    6So David said to Abishai, "Now Sheba, son of Bichri, will do us more harm than Absalom did. Take your lord's servants and pursue him quickly, or he may find fortified cities and escape from us."

    7Joab's men, along with the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and all the mighty warriors, marched out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
