  • 1 Kgs 1:5-9 : 5 Adonijah, the son of Haggith, exalted himself, saying, "I will become king." He acquired chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run ahead of him. 6 His father had never rebuked him by asking, "Why have you done this?" Adonijah was also very handsome, and he was born after Absalom. 7 Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and Abiathar the priest, and they supported him. 8 But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and David’s mighty men did not side with Adonijah. 9 Adonijah sacrificed sheep, cattle, and fattened calves at the Stone of Zoheleth near En Rogel. He invited all his brothers, the king's sons, and all the men of Judah who served the king. 10 But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men, or his brother Solomon. 11 Then Nathan said to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, "Have you not heard that Adonijah, the son of Haggith, has become king, and our lord David does not know about it?" 12 "Now go, please, let me advise you so that you may save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. 13 Go to King David and say to him, 'My lord the king, did you not swear to your servant, saying, "Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne"? Then why has Adonijah become king?' 14 While you are still speaking to the king, I will come in after you and confirm your words." 15 So Bathsheba went to see the king in his chamber. The king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was attending to him. 16 Bathsheba bowed low and paid homage to the king. The king asked her, "What is it you want?" 17 She said to him, "My lord, you yourself swore by the LORD your God to your servant, saying, 'Solomon your son will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne.' 18 But now Adonijah has made himself king, and you, my lord the king, do not know about it.
  • 1 Kgs 2:13-25 : 13 Now Adonijah, the son of Haggith, came to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon. She asked, 'Do you come in peace?' And he replied, 'In peace.' 14 Then he said, 'I have something to say to you.' She replied, 'Speak.' 15 He said, 'You know that the kingdom was mine and that all Israel turned their faces to me to make me king. But the kingdom has been transferred and has become my brother's, for it was the LORD's will.' 16 'Now I have one request to make of you; do not refuse me.' And she said, 'Speak.' 17 He continued, 'Please ask King Solomon—he will not refuse you—to give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.' 18 'Very well,' Bathsheba replied. 'I will speak to the king for you.' 19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah. The king rose to meet her, bowed down to her, and then sat on his throne. He also had a throne placed for the king’s mother, and she sat at his right hand. 20 She said, 'I have one small request to make of you. Do not refuse me.' The king replied, 'Ask, my mother, for I will not refuse you.' 21 So she said, 'Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to your brother Adonijah as his wife.' 22 King Solomon answered his mother, 'Why do you request Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? You might as well request the kingdom for him—for he is my elder brother—yes, for him and for Abiathar the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah!' 23 Then King Solomon took an oath by the LORD: 'May God punish me ever so severely if Adonijah has not made this request at the cost of his own life! 24 'And now, as surely as the LORD lives—the one who has established me, seated me on the throne of my father David, and made me a dynasty as He promised—Adonijah shall be put to death today!' 25 Then King Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who struck down Adonijah, and he died.
