For the Lord, the Lord of Hosts, will hold a sacrifice in the land of the north by the Euphrates River. 11 Go up to Gilead and get balm, Virgin Daughter Egypt. But you multiply remedies in vain; there is no healing for you. 12 The nations have heard of your shame; the earth is filled with your cry. One warrior stumbles over another; both fall together. 13 This is the word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, coming to strike the land of Egypt. 14 Announce it in Egypt, proclaim it in Migdol; proclaim it also in Memphis and Tahpanhes: 'Take your positions and prepare yourself, for the sword has devoured those around you.' 15 Why has your strong one been swept away? Then they will know that I am the Lord. 1 In the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 Son of man, speak to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and to his vast multitude: 'Who can compare to you in your greatness?' 3 Behold, Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful branches, dense shade, and towering height, its top reaching among the thick clouds. 4 The waters nourished it; the deep made it grow tall, sending its rivers around its planting place, and they watered all the trees of the field. 5 So it grew taller than all the trees of the field; its branches multiplied, and its boughs grew long because of the abundance of water as it sent them out. 6 All the birds of the sky nested in its branches, every beast of the field gave birth under its boughs, and all the great nations lived in its shade. 7 It was majestic in its size, with long branches, because its roots reached abundant waters. 8 The cedars in God's garden could not rival it; the cypresses could not compare to its branches, and the plane trees were not like its boughs. No tree in the garden of God was equal to it in beauty. 9 I made it beautiful with its many branches, and all the trees of Eden, which were in the garden of God, envied it. 10 Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: Because it grew tall, lifting its top among the clouds, and its heart became arrogant because of its height, 11 I handed it over to a mighty ruler among the nations; he dealt with it according to its wickedness. I drove it out. 12 Foreigners, the most ruthless of nations, cut it down and abandoned it. Its branches fell on the mountains and in all the valleys; its boughs were broken in all the ravines of the earth, and all the nations of the earth left its shade. 13 All the birds of the sky rested on its fallen trunk, and all the wild animals were among its branches. 14 This happened so that no trees beside the abundant waters may grow tall enough to reach the clouds, nor lift their tops among the thick branches, and no trees that drink water will stand before them in their height. For they have all been consigned to death, to the lower earth, among the sons of men, with those who go down to the pit. 15 This is what the Lord GOD says: On the day it went down to Sheol, I caused mourning; I covered the deep because of it, restrained its rivers, and held back the abundant waters. I clothed Lebanon in gloom because of it, and all the trees of the field withered away over it. 16 I made the nations quake at the sound of its fall when I brought it down to Sheol along with those who descend to the pit. Then all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, were comforted in the lower earth. 17 They too went down to Sheol with it, to join the slain by the sword, along with its supporters who had lived in its shadow among the nations. 18 To whom can you be compared in glory and greatness among the trees of Eden? Yet you too will be brought down to the lower earth, lying among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his hordes, declares the Lord GOD. 1 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 Son of man, sing a lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say to him, 'You consider yourself like a young lion among the nations, but you are like a sea monster in the seas; you thrash about in your rivers, stir the waters with your feet, and muddy their streams.' 3 This is what the Lord GOD says: 'I will spread my net over you with a vast assembly of many peoples, and they will draw you up in my dragnet. 4 I will leave you on the land, hurl you onto the open field. I will make all the birds of the heavens settle on you, and the wild beasts of the earth will feast on you. 5 I will scatter your flesh on the mountains and fill the valleys with your remains. 6 I will soak the land with your blood, right up to the mountains; and the ravines will be filled with your masses. 7 When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars. I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light. 8 All the shining lights in the sky I will darken over you, and I will bring darkness over your land, declares the Lord GOD. 9 I will trouble the hearts of many peoples when I bring about your ruin among the nations, in lands you do not know. 10 I will cause many peoples to be appalled at you, and their kings will shudder in horror over you when I brandish my sword before them. They will tremble every moment, each for their lives, on the day of your downfall. 11 For this is what the Lord GOD says: 'The sword of the king of Babylon will come against you.' 12 By the swords of mighty warriors, the most ruthless of all nations, I will bring down your horde. They will ravage the pride of Egypt, and all its hordes will be destroyed. 13 I will destroy all its cattle beside many waters, so no human foot will stir them up again, nor will the hooves of cattle stir them up. 14 Then I will let their waters settle and make their rivers flow like oil, declares the Lord GOD. 15 When I make the land of Egypt desolate and lay waste everything in it, striking down all who live there, then they will know that I am the LORD. 16 This is a lamentation, and the daughters of the nations will chant it. They will chant it for Egypt and all her multitude, declares the Lord GOD. 17 In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 18 Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and bring her and the daughters of mighty nations down to the earth below, to those who go down to the pit. 19 Who do you surpass in beauty? Go down and be laid to rest with the uncircumcised. 20 They will fall among those slain by the sword. The sword is drawn; drag her down along with all her multitudes. 21 The mighty chiefs will speak of them from the midst of Sheol, with their allies. They have gone down, lying with the uncircumcised, slain by the sword. 22 Assyria is there with all her company, their graves all around, all of them slain, fallen by the sword. 23 Their graves are set in the depths of the pit, and her company is all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, spreading terror in the land of the living. 24 Elam is there with all her multitude around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword. They went down uncircumcised to the earth below, having spread their terror in the land of the living. They bear their disgrace with those who go down to the pit. 25 A bed is made for them among the slain with all their multitude. Their graves are around them, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword. Though their terror was spread in the land of the living, they bear their disgrace with those who go down to the pit; they are placed among the slain. 26 Meshech and Tubal are there with all their multitude, their graves surround them, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword. Though they spread their terror in the land of the living, 27 They do not lie with the mighty who have fallen among the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were laid under their heads. Their iniquities rest upon their bones, for the terror of the mighty was in the land of the living. 28 But you too will be broken and will lie among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. 29 Edom is there with her kings and all her princes, who despite their might, are laid with those killed by the sword. They will lie with the uncircumcised and with those who go down to the pit. 30 There lie the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Sidonians, who went down with the slain in their terror because of their might. They lie uncircumcised with those slain by the sword, bearing their shame with those who go down to the pit. 31 Pharaoh will see them and will be comforted for all his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord GOD. 32 For I placed my terror in the land of the living, and he will be laid among the uncircumcised with those slain by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.

The idols of Egypt tremble before Him, and the hearts of the Egyptians melt within them. 2 I will stir up Egyptians against Egyptians, and they will fight, each against his brother, each against his neighbor, city against city, and kingdom against kingdom. 3 The spirit of the Egyptians will be emptied from within them, and I will confound their plans. They will seek idols, mediums, spirits, and fortune-tellers. 4 I will hand over the Egyptians to a harsh master, and a fierce king will rule over them,” declares the Lord, the LORD of Hosts. 5 The waters will dry up from the sea, and the river will be parched and dry. 6 The rivers will stink, the streams of Egypt will dwindle and dry up; reeds and rushes will wither. 7 The meadows by the Nile, along the banks of the river, and all sown land by the Nile will wither, be blown away, and be no more. 8 The fishermen will mourn, all who cast hooks into the Nile will lament, and those who spread nets on the water will grow weak. 9 Those who work with combed flax and those who weave fine linen will be dismayed. 10 The pillars of the land will be crushed, and all who work for wages will be dejected in spirit. 11 The princes of Zoan are utterly foolish; Pharaoh's wisest counselors give senseless advice. How can you say to Pharaoh, 'I am a descendant of the wise, a son of ancient kings'? 12 Where are your wise men now? Let them tell you and make known what the LORD of Hosts has planned against Egypt. 13 The princes of Zoan have become fools; the princes of Memphis are deceived. They have led Egypt astray, the cornerstone of its tribes. 14 The LORD has mixed within her a spirit of confusion, and they have led Egypt astray in all that it does, like a drunkard staggering in his vomit. 15 There will be no work for Egypt that head or tail, palm branch or reed, can accomplish. 16 In that day, the Egyptians will be like women and will tremble with fear before the uplifted hand of the LORD of Hosts, which He raises against them. 17 The land of Judah will terrify Egypt, and everyone in Egypt who hears the mention of it will be gripped with fear because of the plan of the LORD of Hosts, which He is devising against them.
