  • Josh 17:1-9 : 1 A portion of land was allotted to the tribe of Manasseh, for he was Joseph's firstborn. To Machir, the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, since he was a man of war, Gilead and Bashan were given. 2 The rest of the families of Manasseh also received their inheritance, including the families of Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida—these were the male descendants of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, according to their families. 3 Now Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, only daughters. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 4 They approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders, saying, 'The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.' So, in accordance with the LORD's command, they were given an inheritance among their father's brothers. 5 Ten portions fell to Manasseh, in addition to the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is beyond the Jordan. 6 For the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance among his sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the descendants of Manasseh. 7 The territory of Manasseh stretched from Asher to Michmethath, which is near Shechem. Then the boundary ran southward to the inhabitants of En Tappuah. 8 The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh, but Tappuah itself, on the boundary of Manasseh, belonged to the descendants of Ephraim. 9 The boundary descended to the Wadi Kanah, southward of the wadi. These towns belonged to Ephraim within the towns of Manasseh. The boundary of Manasseh was on the north side of the wadi and ended at the sea. 10 To the south, the land belonged to Ephraim; to the north, it belonged to Manasseh. The sea formed its boundary. Manasseh touched Asher on the north and Issachar on the east. 11 Within Issachar and Asher, Manasseh possessed Beth-shean and its villages, Ibleam and its villages, the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, the inhabitants of En-dor and its villages, the inhabitants of Taanach and its villages, the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, and the three regions of Napheth.

May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac. May they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.' 17 When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s. 18 Joseph said to his father, 'No, my father, this one is the firstborn; place your right hand on his head.' 19 But his father refused and said, 'I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will be great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations.' 20 On that day, he blessed them and said, 'By you, Israel will pronounce this blessing: May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.' So he placed Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.
