The men of Gilead would respond, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he said, "No," 6 they would say, "Say 'Shibboleth.'" And if he said 'Sibboleth,' because he could not pronounce it correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time, forty-two thousand from Ephraim were killed.

This is the third time you have made a fool of me and have not told me the secret of your great strength.' 16 With her nagging she pressed him day after day until he was sick to death of it. 17 So he told her everything: 'No razor has ever been used on my head,' he said, 'because I have been a Nazirite dedicated to God from my mother’s womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.' 18 When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, 'Come back once more; he has told me everything.' So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands. 19 After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven locks of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And he replied, 'Here I am, my lord.' 13 Saul said to him, 'Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, giving him bread and a sword and inquiring of God for him, so that he has risen against me to lie in wait, as he does today?' 14 Ahimelech answered the king, 'Who among all your servants is as faithful as David, the king's son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard, and highly respected in your house?' 15 Was this the first time I inquired of God for him? Of course not! Far be it from me! Let not the king accuse me or any of my father's family, for your servant knows nothing about this whole affair—whether great or small.' 16 The king said, 'You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and your whole family.' 17 Then the king ordered the guards standing by him, 'Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because they are allies of David. They knew he was fleeing but didn’t inform me.' But the king's servants were unwilling to raise their hands to strike the priests of the Lord.

Don’t be afraid. Haven’t I ordered you? Be strong and courageous.’ 29 So Absalom’s servants did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons got up, mounted their mules, and fled.
  • 2 Sam 15:2-6 : 2 Absalom would rise early and stand beside the road to the gate. Whenever a man came with a dispute to bring before the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and ask, 'Which city are you from?' And the man would answer, 'Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.' 3 Then Absalom would say to him, 'Look, your claims are good and valid, but there is no one appointed by the king to hear you.' 4 And Absalom would add, 'If only I were appointed judge in the land, then every man who has a dispute or case could come to me, and I would ensure he receives justice.' 5 Whenever a man approached to bow down to him, Absalom would reach out, take hold of him, and kiss him. 6 Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king for judgment, and he stole the hearts of the people of Israel.
  • 2 Sam 16:20-17:2 : 20 Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, "Give us your advice. What should we do?" 21 Ahithophel answered, "Sleep with your father’s concubines, whom he left to care for the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself obnoxious to your father, and the hands of everyone with you will be strengthened." 22 So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel. 23 Now the advice Ahithophel gave in those days was like someone inquiring of God. Such was all of Ahithophel’s advice to both David and Absalom. 1 Ahithophel said to Absalom, 'Let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will set out and pursue David tonight.' 2 I will attack him while he is weary and weak-handed, and I will frighten him. All the people with him will flee, and I will strike down only the king.
  • 2 Sam 19:43-20:1 : 43 The men of Judah responded to the men of Israel, "The king is closely related to us. Why are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten any of the king’s provisions, or have we taken anything for ourselves?" 44 Then the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, "We have ten shares in the king, and in David too we have more claim than you. So why did you treat us with contempt? Were we not the first to speak of bringing the king back?" But the words of the men of Judah were harsher than those of the men of Israel. 1 Now a troublemaker named Sheba, son of Bichri, a Benjamite, happened to be there. He blew the trumpet and declared, "We have no share in David, no inheritance in Jesse's son. Every man to his tent, Israel!"
  • 1 Kgs 21:5-9 : 5 His wife Jezebel came to him and asked, 'Why are you so upset that you won’t eat?' 6 He told her, 'When I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said, “Give me your vineyard for money, or if you prefer, I’ll give you another vineyard in exchange,” he replied, “I will not give you my vineyard.”' 7 Jezebel, his wife, said to him, 'Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up, eat, and cheer up. I’ll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.' 8 So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, sealed them with his seal, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth’s city. 9 In those letters she wrote, 'Proclaim a fast and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people.' 10 Then seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them accuse him, saying, 'You have cursed God and the king.' Then take him out and stone him to death. 11 So the elders and nobles of this city, who lived there, carried out Jezebel’s instructions, just as she had written in the letters she sent them. 12 They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth in a prominent place among the people. 13 Two worthless men came and sat opposite Naboth. They testified against him before the people, saying, 'Naboth has cursed God and the king.' So they took him outside the city, stoned him to death, and he died. 14 Then they sent word to Jezebel, saying, 'Naboth has been stoned and is dead.' 15 As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, she said to Ahab, 'Get up and take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to sell to you for silver. Naboth is no longer alive, but dead.'
  • 2 Chr 10:13-16 : 13 The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders, 14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, "My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father disciplined you with whips; I will discipline you with scorpions." 15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God, to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat. 16 When all Israel realized that the king had not listened to them, they responded to the king, saying, "What share do we have in David? What inheritance is there for us in the son of Jesse? Every man to your tents, Israel! Now take care of your own house, David!" So all the Israelites returned to their homes.
