Nevertheless Saul spoke not anything that day: for he thought, Something has befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.

    31For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the ground, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Therefore now send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.

    32And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, Why should he be slain? What has he done?

    33And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him, whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to slay David.

    34So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no food the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

    24So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat down to eat food.

    25And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty.

    21Then Saul said, "I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will harm you no more because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have played the fool and have erred exceedingly."
