Then he permitted him. 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, came up immediately out of the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him: 17 And behold, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

  • Luke 3:1-9 : 1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, 2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 And he came into all the country around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins; 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; 6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. 7 Then he said to the multitude that came forth to be baptized by him, O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father: for I say to you, That God is able out of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore that does not produce good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. 10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? 11 He answered and said to them, He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise. 12 Then the tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, Teacher, what shall we do? 13 And he said to them, Collect no more than what is appointed to you. 14 And the soldiers likewise asked of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said to them, Do violence to no man, nor accuse anyone falsely; and be content with your wages. 15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men pondered in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not; 16 John answered, saying to them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I comes, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire: 17 Whose winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 18 So, with many other exhortations, he preached to the people.
  • John 1:28-51 : 28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. 30 This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me. 31 I did not know him, but that he should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water. 32 And John bore witness, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained upon him. 33 I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God. 35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as he walked, he said, Behold the Lamb of God! 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, What do you seek? They said to him, Rabbi, (which is to say, when translated, Teacher,) where are you staying? 39 He said to them, Come and see. They came and saw where he was staying, and remained with him that day; it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, We have found the Messiah, (which is translated, the Christ.) 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, he said, You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas, (which is translated, A Stone.) 43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and he found Philip and said to him, Follow me. 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote; Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. 46 And Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit! 48 Nathanael said to him, How do you know me? Jesus answered and said to him, Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you. 49 Nathanael answered and said to him, Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel. 50 Jesus answered and said to him, Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these. 51 And he said to him, Verily, verily, I say to you, Hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
