because you did not listen to the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you: 46 And they shall be upon you for a sign and for a wonder, and upon your descendants forever. 47 Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things; 48 Therefore you shall serve your enemies which the LORD shall send against you, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon your neck, until he has destroyed you. 49 The LORD shall bring a nation against you from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies; because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God. 63 And it shall come to pass, that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to nothing; and you shall be plucked from off the land where you go to possess it. 64 And the LORD shall scatter you among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there you shall serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known, even wood and stone. 65 And among these nations shall you find no ease, neither shall the sole of your foot have rest: but the LORD shall give you there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: 66 And your life shall hang in doubt before you; and you shall fear day and night, and shall have no assurance of your life: 67 In the morning you shall say, Would God it were evening! and at evening you shall say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of your heart with which you shall fear, and for the sight of your eyes which you shall see. 68 And the LORD shall bring you into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spoke unto you, You shall see it no more again: and there you shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.

• Judg 10:6-9 : 6 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Sidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and forsook the LORD, and did not serve Him. 7 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the children of Ammon. 8 And that year they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel: for eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the other side of Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. 9 Moreover, the children of Ammon crossed over Jordan to fight against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was greatly distressed. 10 And the children of Israel cried out to the LORD, saying, We have sinned against You, both because we have forsaken our God and also served the Baals. 11 And the LORD said to the children of Israel, Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines? 12 The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites oppressed you; and you cried out to Me, and I delivered you from their hand. 13 Yet you have forsaken Me and served other gods; therefore, I will deliver you no more. 14 Go and cry to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in your time of distress. 15 And the children of Israel said to the LORD, We have sinned: do to us whatever seems good to You, but please deliver us this day. 16 And they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD; and His soul was grieved for the misery of Israel. 17 Then the children of Ammon were gathered together and encamped in Gilead. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together and encamped in Mizpah. 18 And the people and leaders of Gilead said to one another, Who is the man that will begin the fight against the children of Ammon? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
