All those men were leaders of the children of Israel. 4 And these were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur. 5 From the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori. 6 From the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 7 From the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph. 8 From the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun. 9 From the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu. 10 From the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi. 11 From the tribe of Joseph, namely, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi. 12 From the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli. 13 From the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael. 14 From the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi. 15 From the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi. 16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua. 17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, Go up this way southward, and go up into the mountain: 18 See the land, how it is; and the people who dwell in it, whether they are strong or weak, few or many; 19 And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they dwell in, whether in tent camps or fortified cities; 20 And what the land is, whether it is rich or poor, whether there is wood in it, or not. Be of good courage, and bring some of the fruit of the land. Now was the time of the first ripe grapes. 21 So they went up and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near the entrance of Hamath. 22 And they ascended by the south and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 And they came to the Valley of Eshcol, and cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they carried it between two on a staff. They also brought pomegranates and figs. 24 The place was called the Valley of Eshcol because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down there. 25 And they returned from exploring the land after forty days. 26 And they went and came to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, and said, We came to the land where you sent us, and surely it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless, the people are strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south; and the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan. 30 And Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it. 31 But the men who went up with him said, We cannot go up against the people, for they are stronger than we. 32 And they gave a bad report of the land which they had explored to the children of Israel, saying, The land through which we have gone to explore it is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, descendants of the giants; and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight. 1 And all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried; and the people wept that night. 2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said to them, Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would that we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why has the LORD brought us to this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be prey? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt? 4 And they said to one another, Let us choose a captain, and let us return to Egypt.
  • Num 14:10-41 : 10 But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel. 11 And the LORD said to Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be before they believe me, for all the signs which I have shown among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they. 13 And Moses said to the LORD, Then the Egyptians will hear it, (for you brought up this people in your might from among them;) 14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that you LORD are among this people, that you LORD are seen face to face, and that your cloud stands over them, and that you go before them, by day in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if you shall kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying, 16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness. 17 And now, I beseech you, let the power of my Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying, 18 The LORD is longsuffering and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation. 19 Pardon, I beseech you, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your mercy, and as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now. 20 And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to your word: 21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD. 22 Because all those men who have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not listened to my voice; 23 Surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it: 24 But my servant Caleb, because he had a different spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him will I bring into the land where he went; and his offspring shall possess it. 25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) Tomorrow turn you, and get into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea. 26 And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 27 How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmurs against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me. 28 Say to them, As truly as I live, says the LORD, as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you: 29 Your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me, 30 Surely you shall not come into the land, concerning which I swore to make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 But your little ones, which you said would be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised. 32 But as for you, your carcasses, they shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your faithlessness, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness. 34 After the number of the days in which you searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall you bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you shall know my breach of promise. 35 I the LORD have said, I will surely do it to all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die. 36 And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land, 37 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD. 38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still. 39 And Moses told these sayings to all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly. 40 And they rose up early in the morning, and went up into the top of the mountain, saying, Here we are, and will go up to the place which the LORD has promised: for we have sinned. 41 And Moses said, Why now do you transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.
  • Deut 1:19-33 : 19 And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which you saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh Barnea. 20 And I said to you, You have come to the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God is giving to us. 21 Behold, the LORD your God has set the land before you: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of your fathers has told you; do not fear, neither be discouraged. 22 And every one of you came near to me, and said, Let us send men before us, and they shall search out the land for us, and bring us back word of the way we must go up and of the cities we will come to. 23 And the plan pleased me well: so I took twelve men of you, one man for each tribe: 24 And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came to the Valley of Eshcol, and explored it. 25 And they took some of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down to us, and brought us back word, saying, It is a good land which the LORD our God is giving us. 26 Nevertheless you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the LORD your God: 27 And you murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 28 Where shall we go up? Our brethren have discouraged our hearts, saying, The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there. 29 Then I said to you, Do not be terrified, nor be afraid of them. 30 The LORD your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you, according to all He did for you in Egypt before your eyes; 31 And in the wilderness, where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place. 32 Yet, in this thing you did not believe the LORD your God, 33 Who went in the way before you, to search out a place for you to pitch your tents, in fire by night to show you by what way you should go, and in a cloud by day.
