  • 2 Sam 11:2-9 : 2 And it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king's house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. 3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? 4 Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house. 5 And the woman conceived, so she sent and told David, and said, I am with child. 6 Then David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. 7 When Uriah had come to him, David asked how Joab was doing, and how the people were doing, and how the war prospered. 8 And David said to Uriah, Go down to your house and wash your feet. So Uriah departed from the king's house, and a gift of food from the king followed him. 9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. 10 When they told David, saying, Uriah did not go down to his house, David said to Uriah, Did you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house? 11 And Uriah said to David, The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields. Shall I then go to my house to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing. 12 Then David said to Uriah, Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart. So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. 13 Now when David called him, he ate and drank before him, and he made him drunk. And at evening he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house. 14 In the morning it happened that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriah in the forefront of the fiercest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck down and die. 16 So it happened, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah to a place where he knew there were valiant men. 17 Then the men of the city came out and fought with Joab. And some of the people of the servants of David fell; and Uriah the Hittite died also. 18 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war, 19 and charged the messenger, saying, When you have finished telling the matters of the war to the king, 20 if it so happens that the king's wrath rises, and he says to you, Why did you approach so near to the city when you fought? Did you not know they would shoot from the wall? 21 Who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Was it not a woman who cast a piece of a millstone on him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you go near the wall? Then you shall say, Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also. 22 So the messenger went, and came and told David all that Joab had sent by him. 23 And the messenger said to David, Surely the men prevailed against us and came out to us in the field, and we drove them back as far as the entrance of the gate. 24 The archers shot from the wall at your servants, and some of the king's servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also. 25 Then David said to the messenger, Thus you shall say to Joab: Do not let this thing trouble you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Strengthen your attack against the city, and overthrow it. So encourage him. 26 When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband. 27 And when her mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.
  • 2 Chr 33:9-9 : 9 So Manasseh led Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem astray, to do worse than the nations whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel. 10 And the LORD spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they would not listen. 11 Therefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the army of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh among the thorns, bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon. 12 And when he was in distress, he sought the LORD his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. 13 And he prayed to him, and he was entreated of him and heard his supplication, and brought him back to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD was God.
  • Ps 73:5-9 : 5 They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. 6 Therefore pride surrounds them as a chain; violence covers them as a garment. 7 Their eyes bulge with abundance; they have more than heart could wish. 8 They are corrupt, and speak wickedly of oppression; they speak loftily. 9 They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walks through the earth. 10 Therefore his people return here, and waters of a full cup are drained by them. 11 And they say, How does God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High? 12 Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches. 13 Surely I have kept my heart pure in vain, and washed my hands in innocence. 14 For all day long I have been plagued, and chastened every morning. 15 If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I would offend against the generation of Your children. 16 When I thought to understand this, it was too painful for me; 17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I understood their end. 18 Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction. 19 How they are brought into desolation, as in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors. 20 As a dream when one awakes; so, O Lord, when You wake up, You shall despise their image. 21 Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pierced in my mind. 22 So foolish was I, and ignorant; I was like a beast before You. 23 Nevertheless I am continually with You; You hold me by my right hand. 24 You shall guide me with Your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. 25 Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire beside You. 26 My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. 27 For indeed, those who are far from You shall perish; You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to You. 28 But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all Your works.
  • Hos 2:6-7 : 6 Therefore, behold, I will hedge up your way with thorns, and make a wall, so she shall not find her paths. 7 And she shall pursue her lovers, but she shall not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then she shall say, I will go and return to my first husband; for it was better with me then than now.
  • Hos 5:15-6:1 : 15 I will go and return to my place, until they acknowledge their offense, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me earnestly. 1 Come, and let us return to the LORD: for he has torn, and he will heal us; he has struck us, and he will bind us up.
  • Heb 12:5-9 : 5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to children, "My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by him: 6 For whom the Lord loves he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives." 7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastisement, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we respected them: shall we not much more be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but he for our benefit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful: nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
  • Rev 3:10 : 10 Because you have kept the word of my patience, I also will keep you from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try those who dwell upon the earth.
