9They told him,“Your subjects have come from a very distant land because of the reputation of the LORD your God, for we have heard the news about all he did in Egypt
19but all the leaders told the whole community,“We swore an oath to them in the name of the LORD God of Israel. So now we can’t hurt them!
20We must let them live so we can escape the curse attached to the oath we swore to them.”
21The leaders then added,“Let them live.” So they became woodcutters and water carriers for the whole community, as the leaders had decided.
15Joshua made a peace treaty with them and agreed to let them live. The leaders of the community sealed it with an oath.
16Three days after they made the treaty with them, the Israelites found out they were from the local area and lived nearby.

3When the residents of Gibeon heard what Joshua did to Jericho and Ai,
7Joshua prayed,“O, Sovereign LORD! Why did you bring these people across the Jordan to hand us over to the Amorites so they could destroy us? If only we had been satisfied to live on the other side of the Jordan!
9Joshua told the Israelites,“Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God!”
10Joshua continued,“This is how you will know the living God is among you and that he will truly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites.
9When the Canaanites and all who live in the land hear about this, they will turn against us and destroy the very memory of us from the earth. What will you do to protect your great reputation?”
15Joshua and all Israel pretended to be defeated by them and they retreated along the way to the wilderness.
16All the reinforcements in Ai were ordered to chase them; they chased Joshua and were lured away from the city.
16They told Joshua,“We will do everything you say. We will go wherever you send us.
12Joshua told the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh:
22Joshua told the two men who had spied on the land,“Enter the prostitute’s house and bring out the woman and all who belong to her as you promised her.”
13Israel Conquers Jericho When Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him holding a drawn sword. Joshua approached him and asked him,“Are you on our side or allied with our enemies?”
10Joshua Prepares for the Invasion Joshua instructed the leaders of the people:

2So Joshua summoned all Israel, including the elders, rulers, judges, and leaders, and told them:“I am very old.
11Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenantal commandment! They have taken some of the riches; they have stolen them and deceitfully put them among their own possessions.
4He ordered them,“Look, set an ambush behind the city. Don’t go very far from the city; all of you be ready!
23Then the two men returned– they came down from the hills, crossed the river, came to Joshua son of Nun, and reported to him all they had discovered.
