  • 2 Kgs 24:1-7 : 1 During Jehoiakim's reign, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant for three years. Then he turned and rebelled against him. 2 The LORD sent against him bands of Chaldeans, Arameans, Moabites, and Ammonites. He sent them to destroy Judah, fulfilling the word of the LORD spoken through His servants, the prophets. 3 Surely this came upon Judah by the command of the LORD, to remove them from His sight because of the sins of Manasseh and all he had done. 4 And also because of the innocent blood that he had shed, for he had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the LORD was unwilling to pardon. 5 The rest of the deeds of Jehoiakim, and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 6 Jehoiakim rested with his ancestors, and his son Jehoiachin became king in his place. 7 The king of Egypt did not march out of his own land again, for the king of Babylon had taken all his territory, from the Brook of Egypt to the Euphrates River.

  • Jer 22:13-17 : 13 Woe to him who builds his house without righteousness and his upper rooms without justice, making his neighbor work for nothing and not paying him for his labor. 14 He says, 'I will build for myself a great house with spacious upper rooms,' cutting out large windows for it, paneling it with cedar, and painting it with vermilion. 15 Do you think you are a king because you compete in cedar? Your father ate and drank, but he practiced justice and righteousness, and it went well with him. 16 He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and it was well with him. Is this not what it means to know me? declares the LORD. 17 But your eyes and heart are set only on your dishonest gain, on shedding innocent blood, and on oppression and violence.
  • Jer 26:1-9 : 1 At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the LORD: 2 The LORD says, 'Stand in the courtyard of the LORD's house and declare to all the cities of Judah, who come to worship in the LORD's house, all the words I command you to speak to them. Do not omit a single word.' 3 Perhaps they will listen and turn, each one, from their evil ways. Then I will relent concerning the disaster that I plan to bring on them because of the evil they have done. 4 And you shall say to them, 'The LORD says: If you do not listen to Me and follow My law which I have set before you... 5 ...and listen to the words of My servants the prophets, whom I have persistently sent to you (though you have not listened), 6 then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city an object of cursing among all the nations on earth.' 7 And the priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD. 8 And when Jeremiah finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests, the prophets, and all the people seized him, saying, 'You shall surely die!' 9 'Why have you prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, “This house will become like Shiloh, and this city will be desolate, without inhabitants”?' And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the LORD's house. 10 When the officials of Judah heard these things, they went up from the king’s house to the house of the LORD and sat at the entrance of the New Gate of the LORD's house. 11 Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, 'This man deserves the death sentence, for he has prophesied against this city as you have heard with your own ears.' 12 But Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people, 'The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard.' 13 'Now, therefore, amend your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God. Then the LORD will relent concerning the disaster that He has pronounced against you.' 14 'But as for me, I am in your hands; do with me whatever you think is good and right in your eyes.' 15 But you should certainly know that if you put me to death, you are bringing innocent blood upon yourselves, this city, and its inhabitants, for truly the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing. 16 Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and prophets, 'This man does not deserve the death penalty, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.' 17 And some of the elders of the land stood up and spoke to the whole assembly of the people, saying: 18 'Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah, king of Judah, and said to all the people of Judah, “This is what the LORD of Hosts says: Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a pile of ruins, and the temple mount will become overgrown with thickets.”' 19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the LORD and plead for His favor? And the LORD relented concerning the disaster that He pronounced against them. But we are about to bring a terrible disaster upon ourselves! 20 Now there was another man who prophesied in the name of the LORD, Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and this land in words exactly like those of Jeremiah. 21 When King Jehoiakim, all his mighty men, and all the officials heard his words, the king sought to put him to death. But Uriah heard about it, and he was afraid, so he fled and went to Egypt. 22 Then King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt: Elnathan son of Achbor and some others went with him. 23 They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with the sword and threw his body into the burial place of the common people. 24 Nevertheless, Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.
  • Jer 36:1-9 : 1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying: 2 Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah, and all the nations, from the days of Josiah until today. 3 Perhaps the house of Judah will hear about all the disaster I intend to bring upon them, so that each one may turn from his wicked way. Then I will forgive their iniquity and their sin. 4 So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on the scroll from Jeremiah’s dictation all the words that the LORD had spoken to him. 5 Jeremiah then commanded Baruch, saying, "I am detained; I cannot go to the house of the LORD. 6 But you, go and read aloud from the scroll, which you have written at my dictation, the words of the LORD in the hearing of the people in the house of the LORD on a day of fasting. Also read them in the hearing of all Judah, who come from their cities. 7 Perhaps they will bring their plea before the LORD, and each one will turn from his wicked way, for great are the anger and wrath that the LORD has pronounced against this people. 8 Baruch son of Neriah did everything Jeremiah the prophet commanded him. He read from the scroll the words of the LORD in the house of the LORD. 9 In the fifth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, a fast was proclaimed before the LORD for all the people in Jerusalem and those who had come from the towns of Judah. 10 Then Baruch read from the scroll the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper court at the entrance of the New Gate of the LORD’s house, in the hearing of all the people. 11 When Micaiah son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the LORD from the scroll, 12 he went down to the king’s palace, to the chamber of the secretary, where all the officials were sitting—Elishama the secretary, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials. 13 Then Micaiah told them everything he had heard Baruch read from the scroll to the people. 14 So all the officials sent Jehudi son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, "Bring the scroll from which you have read aloud to the people, and come." So Baruch son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and went to them. 15 The officials said to him, "Please sit down and read it to us." So Baruch read it to them. 16 When they heard all the words, they turned to each other in fear and said to Baruch, "We must report all these words to the king." 17 Then they asked Baruch, "Tell us, how did you write all these words? Did Jeremiah dictate to you?" 18 Baruch answered them, "Jeremiah dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them down with ink on the scroll." 19 The officials said to Baruch, "You and Jeremiah must hide, and don’t let anyone know where you are." 20 After they put the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the secretary, they went to the king in the courtyard and reported all these words to him. 21 The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll. Jehudi brought it from the chamber of Elishama the secretary and read it aloud to the king and all the officials standing by him. 22 Now the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, and a firepot was burning in front of him. 23 As Jehudi read three or four columns of the scroll, the king would cut them off with a scribe’s knife and throw them into the fire in the firepot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire. 24 Neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words were afraid or tore their garments in sorrow. 25 Even though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. 26 Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, a royal prince, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the LORD had hidden them. 27 After the king burned the scroll containing the words Baruch had written at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 28 "Take another scroll and write on it all the original words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned. 29 And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘This is what the LORD says: You burned this scroll, saying, “Why did you write on it that the king of Babylon will surely come and destroy this land and leave it without people or animals?”’ 30 Therefore, this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He will have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body will be thrown out to the heat by day and to the frost by night. 31 I will punish him, his descendants, and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the people of Judah, all the disaster I have pronounced against them, because they have not listened to me. 32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch son of Neriah, the scribe, who wrote on it at Jeremiah’s dictation all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many more similar words were added to them.
