    1Pursue love, and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.

    2For the one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God, because no one understands; they speak mysteries by the Spirit.

    3But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouragement, and comfort.

    4The one who speaks in a tongue builds up themselves, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.

    5I wish that all of you spoke in tongues, but I would rather you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless they interpret so that the church may be built up.

    6Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what good will I be to you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?

    7Even lifeless instruments like the flute or harp, if they do not produce a clear distinction in the notes, how will anyone recognize what is played on the flute or the harp?

    8For if the trumpet gives an unclear sound, who will prepare for battle?

    9In the same way, unless you speak intelligible words through your tongue, how will anyone understand what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air.

    10There are so many kinds of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning.

    11If I do not understand the meaning of what someone is saying, I will be a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker will be a foreigner to me.

    12So with yourselves, since you are eager for spiritual gifts, seek to excel in building up the church.

    13Therefore, the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say.

    14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

    15What then shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.

    16Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can someone who is in the position of an outsider say 'Amen' to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying?

    17You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not built up.

    18I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

    19But in the church, I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

    20Brothers and sisters, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in regard to evil, but in your thinking be mature.

    21In the Law it is written: 'By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me,' says the Lord.

    22Thus, tongues are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign, not for unbelievers but for believers.

    23So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

    24But if everyone is prophesying and an unbeliever or uninitiated person enters, they are convicted of sin by all and are examined by all.

    25The secrets of their heart are revealed, and they will fall facedown and worship God, exclaiming, 'God is truly among you!'

    36Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only ones it has reached?

    37If anyone considers themselves to be a prophet or spiritually gifted, let them acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are the Lord’s commands.

    38But if anyone ignores this, let them remain ignorant.

    39So then, brothers and sisters, eagerly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

    40But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.
