King Solomon answered his mother, 'Why do you request Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? You might as well request the kingdom for him—for he is my elder brother—yes, for him and for Abiathar the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah!'

20Now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
21Otherwise, when my lord the king rests with his ancestors, I and my son Solomon will be treated as offenders.
23Then King Solomon took an oath by the LORD: 'May God punish me ever so severely if Adonijah has not made this request at the cost of his own life!
24'And now, as surely as the LORD lives—the one who has established me, seated me on the throne of my father David, and made me a dynasty as He promised—Adonijah shall be put to death today!'
25Then King Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who struck down Adonijah, and he died.
24Then Nathan said, "My lord the king, have you declared that Adonijah will reign after you and sit on your throne?
25Today he has gone down and sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep in abundance. He has invited all the king's sons, the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Right now they are eating and drinking with him, and they are saying, 'Long live King Adonijah!'
26But me—your servant—and Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon, he did not invite.
27Is this decision from my lord the king, without letting your servants know who is to sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?"
43Jonathan replied to Adonijah, "No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king.
44The king sent Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites with him, and they have placed him on the king's mule.
32King David said, "Call Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada to me." When they came before the king,
33the king said to them, "Take my servants with you, have Solomon my son ride on my own mule, and escort him down to Gihon.
5Of all my sons—for the LORD has given me many sons—He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the LORD’s kingdom over Israel.
35You are to go up with him, and he is to sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.'
2So his servants said to him, "Let us search for a young virgin to attend to my lord the king. She will care for the king and lie beside him to keep him warm."
3They searched throughout the land of Israel for a beautiful young woman and found Abishag, a Shunammite. They brought her to the king.
7That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you."
8Solomon replied to God, "You have shown great lovingkindness to my father David and have made me king in his place.
46Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne.
6Solomon replied, "You have shown great lovingkindness to your servant, my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, righteousness, and uprightness of heart. You have continued this great kindness to him by giving him a son to sit on his throne this day."
17Then David commanded all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon.
1Then King David said to the entire assembly, "My son Solomon, the one chosen by God, is young and inexperienced, and the work is great because this temple is not for man but for the LORD God."
26Then Absalom said, 'If not, please let my brother Amnon come with us.' The king asked him, 'Why should he go with you?'
2The third was Absalom, the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur; the fourth was Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith.
51It was reported to Solomon, "Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon and has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, 'Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death by the sword.'"
