    8With these words, David restrained his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. Then Saul left the cave and went on his way.

    9David got up afterward, went out of the cave, and called after Saul, 'My lord the king!' When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down with his face to the ground and paid homage.

    10David said to Saul, 'Why do you listen to the words of men who say, "David seeks your harm"?'

    11'This day you have seen with your own eyes how the LORD delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you and said, "I will not lay my hand on my lord because he is the LORD’s anointed."'

    12Look, my father, see the corner of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. Know and understand that I am not guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not sinned against you, but you are hunting me down to take my life.

    13May the LORD judge between you and me, and may the LORD avenge me against you, but my hand will not be against you.

    14David asked him, 'How is it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?'

    15Then David called one of his young men and said, 'Come here and strike him down.' So he struck him, and he died.

    16David said to him, 'Your blood is on your own head, because your own mouth testified against you when you said, ‘I killed the LORD's anointed.’'

    22David answered and said, "Here is the king's spear. Let one of the young men come over and take it.

    23The LORD repays everyone for their righteousness and faithfulness, for the LORD delivered you into my hand today, but I would not lay my hand on the LORD's anointed.

    24And just as your life was valuable in my sight today, may my life be valued in the sight of the LORD, and may He deliver me from all distress.

    16What you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, you deserve to die because you did not guard your lord, the LORD's anointed. Now, look around! Where are the king's spear and the jar of water that were near his head?"

    17Saul recognized David’s voice and said, "Is that your voice, my son David?" David replied, "It is my voice, my lord the king."

    18And he added, "Why is my lord pursuing his servant? What have I done, and what wrong is in my hand?

    19Now, may my lord the king please hear the words of his servant. If the LORD has incited you against me, may He accept an offering. But if men have done it, may they be cursed before the LORD, because they have driven me out today to prevent me from having a share in the LORD's inheritance, saying, 'Go, serve other gods.'

    20Now then, do not let my blood fall to the ground far from the presence of the LORD. For the king of Israel has come out to search for a single flea, as one hunts a partridge in the mountains.

    4He came to the sheepfolds along the way, and there was a cave. Saul went in to relieve himself, while David and his men were sitting in the innermost part of the cave.

    5David’s men said to him, 'This is the day the LORD spoke about when He said, "I will give your enemy into your hands, and you may do to him as you see fit."' Then David arose and secretly cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.

    4Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul, his father, saying, "The king should not sin against his servant David. He has done no wrong to you; on the contrary, his actions have greatly benefited you.

    5He risked his life to kill the Philistine, and the LORD brought about a great victory for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. So why would you sin by shedding innocent blood by killing David without cause?

    6Saul listened to Jonathan and swore, "As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be put to death."

    12Then David said, 'Will the leaders of Keilah hand me and my men over to Saul?' The LORD replied, 'They will hand you over.'

  • 17When David finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul asked, 'Is that your voice, my son David?' And Saul wept aloud.

  • 27He said, 'My lord the king, my servant deceived me. I said, ‘I will saddle a donkey for myself and ride on it, so I may go with the king,’ because your servant is lame.

  • 7Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.
