1The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have chosen a king for myself among his sons."
2Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me." The LORD replied, "Take a young cow with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.'
3Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you are to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate to you.
4So Samuel did as the LORD commanded. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled at his coming and asked, "Do you come in peace?"
5He replied, "In peace; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice." Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
1Samuel said to Saul, "The LORD sent me to anoint you as king over His people Israel. Now, listen to the words of the LORD.
13As soon as you enter the city, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not eat until he arrives because he must bless the sacrifice first. After that, those who have been invited can eat. Go now, for you will find him at this time.
14So they went up to the city, and as they were entering it, Samuel was coming out toward them on his way up to the high place.
15Now the LORD had revealed to Samuel the day before Saul came,
16"About this time tomorrow, I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. You shall anoint him as ruler over my people Israel. He will deliver my people from the hand of the Philistines, for I have seen my people and their cry has reached me."
17When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said to him, "Here is the man I told you about; he will govern my people."
1Then Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it on Saul’s head, kissed him, and said, 'Has not the LORD anointed you as ruler over His inheritance?'
18One of the young men answered, "I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a valiant warrior, eloquent, and handsome, and the LORD is with him."
19Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse, saying, "Send me your son David, who is with the sheep."
16Then Samuel said to Saul, 'Stop! Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last night.' Saul replied, 'Speak.'
17Samuel said, 'Although you were small in your own eyes, were you not made the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel.'
23They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people, he was taller than any of them from his shoulders upward.
24Samuel said to the people, 'Do you see the one the LORD has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people.' Then the people shouted, 'Long live the king!'
3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD. They anointed David king over Israel, as the LORD had said through Samuel.
6Jehu got up and went into the house. The young prophet poured the oil on his head and said, 'This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I anoint you king over the LORD's people, Israel.'
21When David came to Saul and stood before him, Saul loved him greatly, and David became his armor-bearer.
22Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, "Allow David to remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight."
16David said to him, 'Your blood is on your own head, because your own mouth testified against you when you said, ‘I killed the LORD's anointed.’'
14David asked him, 'How is it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?'
9As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed his heart, and all these signs came to pass that day.
10When they arrived at Gibeah, a group of prophets came to meet him. Then the Spirit of God came mightily upon Saul, and he began to prophesy among them.

1Then Samuel said to all Israel, 'Here I am; I have listened to you in everything you have said to me, and I have set a king over you.'
14Saul asked her, "What does he look like?" She replied, "An old man is coming up, and he is wrapped in a robe." Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground in reverence.
15Then Samuel left Gilgal and went up to Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul counted the troops who were with him, about six hundred men.
10David said to Saul, 'Why do you listen to the words of men who say, "David seeks your harm"?'
3Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head, saying, 'This is what the LORD says: I anoint you as king over Israel.' Then open the door and flee; do not delay!
5Just then, Saul was coming in from the field, following the oxen. He asked, "What is wrong with the people? Why are they all crying?" They told him what the men of Jabesh had said.
12Now David was the son of an Ephrathite man named Jesse from Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse had eight sons, and in Saul's time, he was old and advanced in years.
6Then Samuel said to the people, 'It is the LORD who appointed Moses and Aaron and who brought your ancestors out of the land of Egypt.'
17Saul recognized David’s voice and said, "Is that your voice, my son David?" David replied, "It is my voice, my lord the king."
35You are to go up with him, and he is to sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.'
9But David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy him, for who can lay a hand on the LORD's anointed and be guiltless?"
