  • Gen 22:17 : 17 I will surely bless you and will greatly multiply your offspring like the stars of the heavens and like the sand on the seashore, and your offspring will possess the gates of their enemies.
  • Gen 25:24-34 : 24 When the time came for her to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb. 25 The first came out red, covered with hair like a fur coat, and they named him Esau. 26 After that, his brother came out with his hand grasping Esau's heel. So he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them. 27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skilled hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was a quiet man who stayed among the tents. 28 Isaac loved Esau because he enjoyed the game Esau brought, but Rebekah loved Jacob. 29 One day when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, exhausted. 30 Esau said to Jacob, 'Let me gulp down some of that red stew, for I am exhausted.' This is why he was also called Edom. 31 Jacob replied, 'First, sell me your birthright.' 32 Esau said, 'Look, I am about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?' 33 But Jacob said, 'Swear to me first.' So Esau swore an oath to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew. Esau ate, drank, got up, and went on his way. So Esau despised his birthright.
  • Gen 27:35-41 : 35 But Isaac said, 'Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing.' 36 Esau said, 'Isn't he rightly named Jacob? For he has cheated me twice: He took my birthright, and now he has taken my blessing!' Then he asked, 'Haven't you reserved any blessing for me?' 37 Isaac answered Esau, 'Behold, I have made him lord over you and have given him all his brothers as servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine. So what can I possibly do for you, my son?' 38 Esau said to his father, 'Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!' Then Esau lifted up his voice and wept. 39 His father Isaac answered him, 'Your dwelling will be away from the richness of the earth and away from the dew of heaven above.' 40 You will live by the sword and serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you will throw his yoke from off your neck. 41 Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, 'The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.'

But the Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors. 16 When we cried out to the LORD, he heard our voice, sent an angel, and brought us out of Egypt. Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory. 17 Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through any field or vineyard, nor will we drink water from any well. We will travel along the King's Highway and not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory. 18 But Edom answered, "You shall not pass through my land, or I will come out against you with the sword." 19 The Israelites replied, "We will travel along the highway, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only ask to pass through on foot." 20 But Edom insisted, "You may not pass through." And Edom came out against them with a large, strong force. 21 Since Edom refused to let Israel pass through its territory, Israel turned away from them.
