  • Josh 16:1-9 : 1 The lot for the sons of Joseph went out from the Jordan at Jericho, eastward to the waters of Jericho, into the wilderness, and ascended from Jericho through the hill country to Bethel. 2 It went out from Bethel to Luz, passed over to the territory of the Archite at Ataroth. 3 It descended westward to the territory of the Japhletite, as far as the border of Lower Beth-horon, and on to Gezer, and it ended at the sea. 4 So the sons of Joseph—Manasseh and Ephraim—received their inheritance. 5 The territory of the sons of Ephraim according to their clans was as follows: The border of their inheritance on the east began at Ataroth-addar and extended to Upper Beth-horon. 6 The border went westward to Michmethath on the north, turned eastward to Taanath-shiloh, and passed east of Janohah. 7 It descended from Janohah to Ataroth and Naarah, reached Jericho, and ended at the Jordan. 8 From Tappuah, the border continued westward to the Brook of Kanah and ended at the sea. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim according to their clans. 9 Additionally, there were cities set apart for the sons of Ephraim in the midst of the inheritance of the sons of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages. 10 However, they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer. So the Canaanites have lived in the midst of Ephraim to this day, but they became forced laborers.

Joseph said to his father, 'They are my sons whom God has given to me here.' Israel said, 'Bring them to me, please, so I may bless them.'

Now Israel’s eyes were failing due to old age—he could not see well. Joseph brought the boys near to him, and he kissed them and embraced them.

Israel said to Joseph, 'I never expected to see your face again, but now God has even let me see your children.'

Joseph removed the boys from Israel’s knees and bowed down with his face to the ground.

Then Joseph took them both—Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right—and brought them close to him.

But Israel stretched out his right hand and placed it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger; and crossing his hands, he placed his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.

Then he blessed Joseph and said, 'The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,'

Joseph said to his father, 'No, my father, this one is the firstborn; place your right hand on his head.'

But his father refused and said, 'I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will be great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations.'

On that day, he blessed them and said, 'By you, Israel will pronounce this blessing: May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.' So he placed Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.
