They pursued them along the road to the Beth-horon ascent and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah. 11 As they fled before Israel down the road from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD hurled large hailstones down on them from heaven, and they died. More of them died from the hailstones than were killed by the swords of the Israelites. 12 On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua spoke to the LORD in the presence of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.” 13 And the sun stood still, and the moon halted until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down for about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it, before or since, when the LORD listened to a human being, because the LORD fought for Israel. 15 Then Joshua, along with all Israel, returned to the camp at Gilgal. 16 Meanwhile, the five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. 17 It was reported to Joshua, saying, “The five kings have been discovered hiding in the cave at Makkedah.” 18 And Joshua commanded, “Roll large stones over the mouth of the cave and post men there to guard them.” 19 But as for you, do not stop! Pursue your enemies and attack them from behind. Do not allow them to enter their cities, for the LORD your God has delivered them into your hands.” 20 So Joshua and the Israelites completely defeated them with a great slaughter, almost wiping them out. But a few survivors managed to retreat to their fortified cities. 21 Then the entire army returned safely to Joshua at the camp in Makkedah, and no one dared to criticize the people of Israel. 22 And Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring out the five kings to me.” 23 They did so, and brought out the five kings from the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon.
