I have rolled up my life like a weaver rolls a cloth; He cuts me off from the loom. Day and night You bring me to an end. 13 I have calmed myself until morning; like a lion, He breaks all my bones. Day and night You bring me to an end. 14 I chirp like a swift or a crane, I moan like a dove. My eyes grow weak as I look to the heavens. Lord, I am oppressed; be my security. 15 What shall I say? He has spoken to me, and He has done this. I will walk humbly all my years because of this anguish of my soul. 16 Lord, by such things people live, and in all of them is the life of my spirit. You restored me to health and let me live. 17 Indeed, it was for my peace that I had great bitterness; but You, in Your love, delivered my soul from the pit of destruction. You have cast all my sins behind Your back. 18 For Sheol cannot thank You, death cannot praise You. Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your faithfulness. 19 The living, the living—they thank You, as I do today. Fathers make Your faithfulness known to their children. 20 The Lord will save me, and we will sing with stringed instruments all the days of our lives in the house of the Lord.

  • Acts 22:1-9 : 1 Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense before you. 2 When they heard that he was speaking to them in the Hebrew language, they became even more quiet, and he said: 3 I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city and educated at the feet of Gamaliel, strictly according to the law of our ancestors. I was zealous for God, just as all of you are today. 4 I persecuted this Way to the point of death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison. 5 As the high priest and the council of elders can testify, I even obtained letters from them to the brothers in Damascus and went there to bring back these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished. 6 But as I was traveling and approaching Damascus, about noon, a bright light from heaven suddenly flashed around me. 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ 8 I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, the one you are persecuting.’ 9 Now those who were with me saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me. 10 I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ The Lord told me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus. There you will be told everything that has been assigned for you to do.’ 11 Since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me and went into Damascus. 12 A man named Ananias, a devout observer of the law who was well spoken of by all the Jews living there, 13 He came to me, stood by, and said, 'Brother Saul, regain your sight!' At that moment, I looked up and could see him. 14 Then he said, 'The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know His will, to see the Righteous One, and to hear words from His mouth. 15 For you will be His witness to all people of what you have seen and heard. 16 And now, why delay? Get up, be baptized, and wash away your sins by calling on His name. 17 After I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, I fell into a trance. 18 I saw Him saying to me, 'Hurry and leave Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about Me.' 19 But I said, 'Lord, they themselves know that I used to imprison and beat those who believed in You in the synagogues. 20 And when the blood of Your servant Stephen was being shed, I stood there, giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.' 21 Then He said to me, 'Go, because I am sending you far away to the Gentiles.'
  • Acts 26:4-9 : 4 The way of life I have lived since my youth, from the very beginning among my own people and in Jerusalem, is well known to all the Jews. 5 They have known me for a long time, and if they are willing, they can testify that I lived according to the strictest sect of our religion as a Pharisee. 6 And now I stand here on trial because of the hope in the promise God made to our ancestors. 7 This is the promise that our twelve tribes hope to attain as they earnestly serve God night and day. It is for this hope, King Agrippa, that I am accused by the Jews. 8 Why is it considered unbelievable by you that God raises the dead? 9 Indeed, I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 And that is what I did in Jerusalem. I locked up many of the saints in prison, having received authority from the chief priests. And when they were condemned to death, I cast my vote against them. 11 I punished them often in all the synagogues, trying to force them to blaspheme. In my raging fury against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities. 12 In this pursuit, I was traveling to Damascus with the authority and commission from the chief priests. 13 At midday, O King, while I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and those traveling with me. 14 When we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me in Hebrew, saying, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.' 15 I asked, 'Who are you, Lord?' And the Lord replied, 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.' 16 But rise and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you: to appoint you as a servant and a witness of what you have seen and of what I will show you. 17 I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them, 18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a share among those who are sanctified by faith in me. 19 So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision. 20 Instead, I preached first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and then to all the region of Judea and to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds. 21 For this reason, the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me. 22 But I have had God’s help to this day, and I stand here to testify to both small and great, saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen: 23 that the Messiah must suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would bring the light of the gospel to our people and to the Gentiles. 24 While Paul was making his defense, Festus said loudly, 'You are out of your mind, Paul! Your great learning is driving you insane.' 25 Paul replied, 'I am not insane, most excellent Festus. What I am saying is true and reasonable.' 26 The king knows about these matters, and I am speaking to him openly. I am convinced that none of this has escaped his notice, for this was not done in a hidden or obscure place. 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe. 28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, 'In such a short time, are you trying to persuade me to become a Christian?' 29 Paul replied, 'I pray to God that whether in a short or long time, not only you but all who are listening to me today might become as I am—except for these chains.'
  • Jonah 2:1-9 : 1 The LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights. 2 Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish. 3 He said, 'I called to the LORD in my distress, and He answered me. From the depths of the grave, I cried out, and You heard my voice.' 4 You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the currents surrounded me. All Your waves and breakers swept over me. 5 I said, 'I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.' 6 The waters engulfed me up to my neck; the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. 7 To the roots of the mountains, I descended. The earth beneath barred me in forever, but You brought my life up from the pit, LORD my God. 8 As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD, and my prayer rose to You, to Your holy temple. 9 Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from their faithful love. 10 But I, with shouts of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. What I have vowed I will fulfill. Salvation comes from the LORD.
