  • 2 Kgs 9:14-10:25 : 14 So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram. (Now Joram was keeping Ramoth-gilead, he and all Israel, because of Hazael king of Syria. 15 But king Joram had returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.) And Jehu said, If this is your decision, then let no one go forth nor escape out of the city to tell it in Jezreel. 16 So Jehu rode in a chariot, and went to Jezreel; for Joram lay there. And Ahaziah king of Judah had come down to see Joram. 17 And there stood a watchman on the tower in Jezreel, and he saw the company of Jehu as he came, and said, I see a company. And Joram said, Take a horseman, and send to meet them, and let him say, Is it peace? 18 So there went one on horseback to meet him, and said, Thus says the king, Is it peace? And Jehu said, What do you have to do with peace? Turn in behind me. And the watchman reported, saying, The messenger reached them, but he has not returned. 19 Then he sent another on horseback, who came to them, and said, Thus says the king, Is it peace? And Jehu answered, What do you have to do with peace? Turn in behind me. 20 And the watchman reported, saying, He reached them and has not returned: and the driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi; for he drives furiously. 21 And Joram said, Prepare. And his chariot was prepared. And Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out, each in his chariot, and they went out against Jehu, and met him in the plot of land of Naboth the Jezreelite. 22 And it happened, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, Is it peace, Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the harlotries of your mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many? 23 And Joram turned his hands, and fled, and said to Ahaziah, Treachery, O Ahaziah! 24 And Jehu drew a bow with his full strength, and struck Jehoram between his arms, and the arrow went out at his heart, and he sank down in his chariot. 25 Then said Jehu to Bidkar his captain, Pick him up, and throw him in the plot of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite: for remember how, when I and you rode together after Ahab his father, the LORD uttered this oracle against him; 26 Surely I have seen yesterday the blood of Naboth, and the blood of his sons, says the LORD; and I will pay you back in this plot, says the LORD. Now, therefore, take and throw him into the plot of ground, according to the word of the LORD. 27 But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. And Jehu pursued him, and said, Strike him also in the chariot. And they did so at the going up to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo and died there. 28 And his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his tomb with his fathers in the city of David. 29 And in the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab, Ahaziah began to reign over Judah. 30 And when Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her eyes, and adorned her head, and looked out at a window. 31 And as Jehu entered at the gate, she said, Is it peace, you Zimri, who slew his master? 32 And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, Who is on my side? Who? And there looked out to him two or three eunuchs. 33 And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trampled her underfoot. 34 And when he had come in, he ate and drank, and said, Go, see now this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king's daughter. 35 And they went to bury her: but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands. 36 Therefore they came back and told him. And he said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spoke by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the plot of Jezreel dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel: 37 And the body of Jezebel shall be as dung on the face of the field in the plot of Jezreel; so that they shall not say, This is Jezebel. 1 And Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters, and sent them to Samaria, to the rulers of Jezreel, to the elders, and to those who raised Ahab's children, saying, 2 As soon as this letter comes to you, seeing your master's sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and horses, a fortified city also, and armor; 3 Select the best and most suitable of your master's sons, and set him on his father's throne, and fight for your master's house. 4 But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, Behold, two kings did not stand before him: how then shall we stand? 5 And he who was over the house, and he who was over the city, the elders also, and those who raised the children, sent to Jehu, saying, We are your servants, and will do all that you bid us; we will not make any king: do what is good in your eyes. 6 Then he wrote a second letter to them, saying, If you are mine, and if you will listen to my voice, take the heads of the men your master's sons, and come to me at Jezreel by tomorrow at this time. Now the king's sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who raised them. 7 And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons, and killed seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them to him at Jezreel. 8 And there came a messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king's sons. And he said, Lay them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until the morning. 9 And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, You are righteous: behold, I conspired against my master, and killed him: but who killed all these? 10 Know now that nothing of the word of the LORD, which the LORD spoke concerning the house of Ahab, shall fail: for the LORD has done what he spoke by his servant Elijah. 11 So Jehu killed all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his kinsfolk, and his priests, until he left none remaining. 12 And he arose and departed, and came to Samaria. And as he was at the shearing house on the way, 13 Jehu met with the brothers of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are you? And they answered, We are the brothers of Ahaziah; and we go down to greet the children of the king and the children of the queen. 14 And he said, Take them alive. And they took them alive, and killed them at the pit of the shearing house, forty-two men; he left none of them. 15 And when he had departed from there, he met Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he greeted him, and said to him, Is your heart right, as my heart is with your heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it is, give me your hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the chariot. 16 And he said, Come with me, and see my zeal for the LORD. So they made him ride in his chariot. 17 And when he came to Samaria, he killed all that remained to Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spoke to Elijah. 18 And Jehu gathered all the people together, and said to them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu shall serve him much. 19 Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be missing: for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal; whoever is missing, he shall not live. But Jehu did it in subtlety, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of Baal. 20 And Jehu said, Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal. And they proclaimed it. 21 And Jehu sent through all Israel: and all the worshippers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left who came not. And they came into the house of Baal; and the house of Baal was full from one end to another. 22 And he said to him that was over the wardrobe, Bring out garments for all the worshippers of Baal. And he brought out garments for them. 23 And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal, and said to the worshippers of Baal, Search and see that none of the servants of the LORD are here with you, but only the worshippers of Baal. 24 And when they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings, Jehu appointed eighty men outside, and said, If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escapes, he who lets him go, his life shall be for the life of him. 25 And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come out. And they struck them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal.
