Kgs 18:17-35 : 17 The king of Assyria sent Tartan, Rabsaris, and Rabshakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah with a great army against Jerusalem. They went up and came to Jerusalem, and when they had gone up, they stood by the aqueduct of the upper pool, which is on the highway to the fuller's field.
When they had called to the king, Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder, went out to them.
Rabshakeh said to them, Say now to Hezekiah, Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: What confidence is this in which you trust?
You say (but they are only vain words) I have counsel and strength for war. Now in whom do you trust, that you rebel against me?
Now behold, you trust in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt, which if a man leans, will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
But if you say to me, We trust in the LORD our God, is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and Jerusalem, You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
Now therefore, please give pledges to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.
How then will you repel one captain of the least of my master's servants and rely on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?
Have I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, Shebna, and Joah said to Rabshakeh, Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it, and do not speak with us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.
But Rabshakeh said to them, Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words? Has he not sent me to the men sitting on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?
Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in Hebrew and spoke, saying, Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
Thus says the king: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand.
Nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be handed over to the king of Assyria.
Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria: Make peace with me and come out to me, and every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and drink from the water of his own cistern,
until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive oil and honey, that you may live and not die. Do not listen to Hezekiah when he persuades you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.
Has any of the gods of the nations at all delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their countries from my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?
