22And behold, the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them. But Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace.
23When Joab and all the host that was with him had come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he has sent him away, and he is gone in peace.
24Then Joab came to the king and said, What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you; why is it that you have sent him away, and he is quite gone?
22And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn aside from following me: why should I strike you to the ground? How could I face Joab your brother?
17And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and crossed over Jordan, and came upon them and set the battle in array against them. So when David had set the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.
1Now the Philistines gathered all their armies at Aphek, and the Israelites camped by a fountain in Jezreel.
32And the Lord will return his blood upon his own head, who struck down two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, my father David not knowing of it: namely, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the army of Judah.

23Now Joab was over all the army of Israel, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites.
