Will you go with me against Moab to battle?" And he said, "I will go up; I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses." 8 And he said, "Which way shall we go up?" And he answered, "The way through the wilderness of Edom." 9 So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom, and they made a circuit of seven days' journey. And there was no water for the army and the cattle that followed them. 10 And the king of Israel said, "Alas, that the LORD has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab!" 11 But Jehoshaphat said, "Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may inquire of the LORD by him?" And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, "Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah." 12 And Jehoshaphat said, "The word of the LORD is with him." So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him. 13 And Elisha said to the king of Israel, "What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother." And the king of Israel said to him, "No, for the LORD has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab." 14 And Elisha said, "As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look at you, nor see you." 15 But now bring me a musician. And it happened, when the musician played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him. 16 And he said, "Thus says the LORD: 'Make this valley full of ditches.' 17 For thus says the LORD: 'You shall not see wind, nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, so that you may drink, both you and your cattle and your animals.' 18 And this is but a trivial thing in the sight of the LORD; He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand. 19 And you shall attack every fortified city and every choice city, and shall cut down every good tree, and stop up all the springs of water, and ruin every good piece of land with stones." 20 And it happened in the morning, when the grain offering was offered, that suddenly water came from the way of Edom, and the land was filled with water. 21 And when all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, they gathered all who were able to put on armor, and stood at the border. 22 And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone on the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood. 23 And they said, "This is blood; the kings are surely slain, and they have struck one another. Now, Moab, to the spoil!" 24 So when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and attacked the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they continued attacking and defeated the Moabites in their land. 25 And they destroyed the cities, and in every good piece of land each man threw a stone and filled it, and they stopped all the springs of water and cut down all the good trees. Only in Kir Haraseth did they leave its stones intact; however, the slingers surrounded it and attacked it. 26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too fierce for him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew swords to break through to the king of Edom; but they could not. 27 Then he took his eldest son, who was to reign in his place, and offered him as a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great wrath against Israel, and they departed from him and returned to their own land.

And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. 5 He sent messengers therefore to Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Look, a people has come out of Egypt; see, they cover the face of the earth, and they dwell opposite me. 6 Come now therefore, I pray you, curse this people for me, for they are too mighty for me: perhaps I shall prevail, that we may strike them, and that I may drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed. 7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand, and they came to Balaam and spoke to him the words of Balak. 8 And he said to them, Stay here this night, and I will bring word again to you, as the LORD shall speak to me: and the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam. 9 And God came to Balaam, and said, Who are these men with you? 10 And Balaam said to God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying, 11 Look, a people has come out of Egypt, which covers the face of the earth; come now, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out. 12 And God said to Balaam, You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people: for they are blessed. 13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said to the princes of Balak, Go back to your land: for the LORD refuses to let me go with you. 14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went to Balak and said, Balaam refuses to come with us. 15 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they. 16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus says Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray you, hinder you from coming to me: 17 For I will promote you to very great honor, and I will do whatever you say to me: come therefore, I pray you, curse this people for me. 18 And Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more. 19 Now therefore, I pray you, stay here this night also, that I may know what more the LORD will say to me. 20 And God came to Balaam at night, and said to him, If the men come to call you, rise up, and go with them; but only the word which I shall say to you, that shall you do. 21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab. 22 And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way as an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 And the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand, and the donkey turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam struck the donkey, to turn her into the way. 24 But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side and a wall on that side. 25 And when the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she pressed herself to the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he struck her again. 26 And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left. 27 And when the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with a staff. 28 And the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times? 29 And Balaam said to the donkey, Because you have mocked me: I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would kill you. 30 And the donkey said to Balaam, Am I not your donkey, upon which you have ridden ever since I became yours until this day? Was I ever accustomed to do so to you? And he said, No. 31 Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed his head, and fell flat on his face. 32 And the angel of the LORD said to him, Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Look, I went out to withstand you, because your way is perverse before me: 33 And the donkey saw me, and turned away from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now I would have slain you, and saved her alive. 34 And Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, I have sinned, for I did not know that you stood in the way against me: now therefore, if it displeases you, I will go back again. 35 And the angel of the LORD said to Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak to you, that you shall speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak. 36 And when Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him at a city of Moab, which is on the border of Arnon, which is at the extreme boundary. 37 And Balak said to Balaam, Did I not earnestly send to you to call you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able indeed to promote you to honor? 38 And Balaam said to Balak, Look, I have come to you: do I have any power at all to say anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that shall I speak. 39 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kirjathhuzoth. 40 And Balak offered oxen and sheep and sent for Balaam and the princes that were with him. 41 And it happened on the next day, that Balak took Balaam and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that from there he might see the furthest part of the people.
• Num 24:1-9 : 1 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness. 2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling in his tents according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came upon him. 3 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor has said, and the man whose eyes are open has said: 4 He has said, who heard the words of God, who saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: 5 How lovely are your tents, O Jacob, and your tabernacles, O Israel! 6 Like valleys they spread out, like gardens by the riverside, like trees of aloes which the LORD has planted, and like cedar trees beside the waters. 7 He shall pour the water from his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted. 8 God brought him out of Egypt; he has the strength of a wild ox: he shall consume the nations, his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows. 9 He crouched, he lay down like a lion, and like a great lion; who shall stir him up? Blessed is he who blesses you, and cursed is he who curses you. 10 And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he struck his hands together; and Balak said to Balaam, I called you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have altogether blessed them these three times. 11 Therefore now flee to your place: I thought to promote you to great honor; but, lo, the LORD has kept you back from honor. 12 And Balaam said to Balak, Did I not also speak to your messengers whom you sent to me, saying, 13 If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of my own mind; but what the LORD says, that will I speak? 14 And now, behold, I go to my people: come therefore, and I will advise you what this people shall do to your people in the latter days. 15 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor has said, and the man whose eyes are open has said: 16 He has said, who heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the Most High, who saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: 17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not near: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Scepter shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. 18 And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly. 19 Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him who remains of the city. 20 And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations, but his latter end shall be that he perish forever. 21 And he looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable, and said, Strong is your dwelling place, and you put your nest in a rock. 22 Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted, until Asshur shall carry you away captive. 23 And he took up his parable, and said, Alas, who shall live when God does this! 24 And ships shall come from the coast of Kittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish forever. 25 And Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place; and Balak also went his way.
