Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had built the wall, and there was no gap in it; (though at that time I had not set up the doors on the gates;)

2 That Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, Come, let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they planned to harm me.
3 And I sent messengers to them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work stop, while I leave it and come down to you?
4 Yet they sent to me four times in this manner; and I answered them in the same way.
5 Then Sanballat sent his servant to me in the same manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;
6 In which was written, It is reported among the nations, and Geshem says it, that you and the Jews plan to rebel: therefore you are building the wall, that you may be their king, according to these reports.
1 But it happened that when Sanballat heard we were building the wall, he was angry, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

12 And, indeed, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
13 Therefore he was hired, that I should be afraid, and act that way, and sin, so they might have cause for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14 My God, remember Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, who would have made me afraid.
15 So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.
16 And it happened, when all our enemies heard of it, and all the nations around us saw these things, they were very disheartened in their own eyes; for they realized that this work was done by our God.
17 Moreover, in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them.
15 Then I went up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the valley gate, and so returned.
16 And the rulers did not know where I had gone, or what I had done; I had not yet told it to the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the rulers, or the rest who did the work.
17 Then I said to them, You see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer be a reproach.
18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me, and also the king's words that he had spoken to me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian heard it, they mocked us and despised us, and said, What is this thing that you do? Will you rebel against the king?
20 Then I answered them and said to them, The God of heaven will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build; but you have no portion, nor right, nor memorial in Jerusalem.
10 When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that a man had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.
11 So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
15 And it happened, when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their plan to nothing, that we all returned to the wall, each to his work.
2 That Hanani, one of my brothers, came with certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.
3 And they said to me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.

16 Indeed, I also devoted myself to the work on this wall and did not buy any land. All my servants were gathered there for the work.
10 Afterward I came to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was confined; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to kill you; indeed, at night they will come to kill you.
7 and I came to Jerusalem and discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah by preparing a room for him in the courts of the house of God.
12 Be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up from you to us are come to Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls and joined the foundations.
13 Be it known now to the king, that, if this city is built, and the walls set up again, then they will not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so you will harm the revenue of the kings.
3 And I said to them, Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they are standing by, let them shut and bar the doors: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one opposite his house.
4 Now the city was large and spacious, but the people were few in it, and the houses were not built.
8 Be it known to the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is being built with great stones, and timber is being laid in the walls, and this work is going on rapidly and prospers in their hands.
9 Then we asked those elders and said to them, Who commanded you to build this house and to finish these walls?
6 Moreover the old gate was repaired by Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah; they laid its beams, and set up its doors, and its locks, and its bars.
19 Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to frighten me.
