And so the Moabites became David's servants and brought gifts. 3 David also defeated Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his territory at the river Euphrates. 4 And David took from him a thousand chariots, seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers; and David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but reserved enough for a hundred chariots. 5 And when the Syrians of Damascus came to aid Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand men of the Syrians. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus, and the Syrians became David's servants and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David wherever he went. 7 And David took the golden shields that were on the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 And from Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took a great amount of bronze. 9 When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had defeated all the army of Hadadezer, 10 Then Toi sent Joram his son to king David, to greet him and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him articles of silver, articles of gold, and articles of bronze. 11 These king David also dedicated to the LORD, along with the silver and gold that he had dedicated from all the nations he had subdued: 12 From Syria, Moab, the children of Ammon, the Philistines, Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah. 13 And David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down eighteen thousand men of the Syrians in the Valley of Salt. 14 And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, and all the Edomites became David's servants. And the LORD preserved David wherever he went. 15 And David reigned over all Israel, and David executed judgment and justice for all his people. 16 And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder; 17 And Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were the priests; and Seraiah was the scribe; 18 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were chief officials.
  • 2 Sam 10:1-9 : 1 And it happened after this that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. 2 Then David said, I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me. So David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon. 3 And the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, Do you think that David honors your father, that he has sent comforters to you? Has not David rather sent his servants to you to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it? 4 Therefore Hanun took David's servants, shaved off half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away. 5 When they told David, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return. 6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they had become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men. 7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men. 8 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ishtob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field. 9 When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose all the elite men of Israel, and set them in array against the Syrians. 10 And the rest of the people he entrusted to the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might set them in array against the children of Ammon. 11 And he said, If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me: but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come to help you. 12 Be of good courage, and let us be valiant for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do what seems good to him. 13 And Joab drew near, and the people who were with him, to the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him. 14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they also fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem. 15 And when the Syrians saw that they were defeated before Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16 And Hadarezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them. 17 And when it was told to David, he gathered all Israel together, crossed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him. 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and struck down Shobach the captain of their host, who died there. 19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
  • 2 Chr 14:1-9 : 1 So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David, and Asa his son reigned in his place. In his days the land was quiet for ten years. 2 And Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God. 3 For he took away the altars of the foreign gods, and the high places, and broke down the images, and cut down the groves. 4 And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to obey the law and the commandment. 5 He also removed the high places and the images from all the cities of Judah, and the kingdom was at peace under him. 6 And he built fortified cities in Judah, for the land was at rest, and he had no war in those years, because the LORD had given him rest. 7 Therefore he said to Judah, 'Let us build these cities, and make walls around them, with towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet at peace; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.' So they built and prospered. 8 And Asa had an army of men who carried shields and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, those who carried shields and drew bows, two hundred and eighty thousand: all these were mighty men of valor. 9 And Zerah the Ethiopian came against them with an army of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots, and came to Mareshah. 10 Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah. 11 And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, 'LORD, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many, or with those who have no power; help us, O LORD our God, for we rest on You, and in Your name we go against this multitude. O LORD, You are our God; let not man prevail against You.' 12 So the LORD struck the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled. 13 And Asa and the people who were with him pursued them to Gerar, and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover, for they were destroyed before the LORD and before His army; and they carried away very much spoil. 14 And they struck all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of the LORD came upon them, and they plundered all the cities, for there was very much spoil in them. 15 They also attacked the tents of cattle and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
  • 2 Chr 20:1-9 : 1 It happened after this that the children of Moab and the children of Ammon, and with them others besides the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat for battle. 2 Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from this side of Syria; and behold, they are in Hazazontamar, which is Engedi. 3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 And Judah gathered together to seek help from the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD. 5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, 6 And said, O LORD God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven? And do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? And in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You? 7 Are You not our God, who drove out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham Your friend forever? 8 And they dwelt in it, and have built You a sanctuary in it for Your name, saying, 9 If disaster comes upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house and in Your presence (for Your name is in this house) and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save us. 10 And now, see, the children of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, whom You would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them and did not destroy them; 11 See, how they repay us, to come to cast us out of Your possession, which You have given us to inherit. 12 O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great company that comes against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You. 13 And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. 14 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly; 15 And he said, Listen, all Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat, Thus says the LORD to you: Do not be afraid or dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's. 16 Tomorrow go down against them. See, they come up by the ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the brook before the wilderness of Jeruel. 17 You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the LORD is with you. 18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshiping the LORD. 19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high. 20 And they rose early in the morning and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa. And as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the LORD your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper. 21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the LORD, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying, Praise the LORD, for His mercy endures forever. 22 Now when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushes against the children of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated. 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another. 24 So when Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and behold, they were dead bodies fallen on the earth; no one had escaped. 25 When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away their spoil, they found among them an abundance of valuables on the dead bodies, and precious jewelry, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away; and they were three days gathering the spoil because there was so much. 26 And on the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berachah, for there they blessed the LORD; therefore the name of that place was called the Valley of Berachah until this day. 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat in front of them, to go back to Jerusalem with joy, for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies. 28 So they came to Jerusalem with stringed instruments, harps, and trumpets, to the house of the LORD. 29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries when they heard that the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel. 30 Then the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest all around. 31 So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 32 And he walked in the way of his father Asa and did not turn aside from it, doing what was right in the sight of the LORD. 33 Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away, for as yet the people had not directed their hearts to the God of their fathers. 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, indeed they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, which is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel. 35 After this, Jehoshaphat king of Judah allied himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who acted very wickedly. 36 And he allied himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish, and they made the ships in Ezion Geber. 37 But Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because you have allied yourself with Ahaziah, the LORD has destroyed your works. So the ships were wrecked and were not able to go to Tarshish.

  • Isa 37:1-9 : 1 And it happened, when King Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD. 2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz. 3 And they said to him, Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children have come to the birth, and there is no strength to bring forth. 4 It may be the LORD your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD your God has heard: therefore, lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left. 5 So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 6 And Isaiah said to them, Thus shall you say to your master, Thus says the LORD, Do not be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumor, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land. 8 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish. 9 And he heard concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come out to make war with you. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10 Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not your God, in whom you trust, deceive you, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by utterly destroying them; and shall you be delivered? 12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? 14 And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up to the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. 15 And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD, saying, 16 O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, who dwells between the cherubim, You are the God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: You have made heaven and earth. 17 Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to reproach the living God. 18 Truly, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their countries, 19 And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them. 20 Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the LORD, You alone. 21 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Because you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria: 22 This is the word which the LORD has spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, has despised you and laughed you to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you. 23 Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? and against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel. 24 By your servants you have reproached the Lord, and have said, By the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down its tall cedars and its choice fir trees: and I will enter the height of its border, the forest of its Carmel. 25 I have dug, and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet I have dried up all the rivers of besieged places. 26 Have you not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient times that I have formed it? Now have I brought it to pass, that you should lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps. 27 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as grain blighted before it is grown up. 28 But I know your abode, and your going out, and your coming in, and your rage against me. 29 Because your rage against me and your tumult have come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came. 30 And this shall be a sign to you: You shall eat this year such as grows of itself; and the second year what springs of the same: and in the third year sow, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 31 And the remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward: 32 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and those who escape out of Mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this. 33 Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor build a siege ramp against it. 34 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, says the LORD. 35 For I will defend this city to save it for my own sake, and for my servant David's sake. 36 Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and struck down in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead bodies. 37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. 38 And it happened, as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons killed him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.
