8as it is written,“God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, to this very day.”
4But what was the divine response to him?“I have kept for myself seven thousand people who have not bent the knee to Baal.”
5So in the same way at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.
6And if it is by grace, it is no longer by works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
19Then you will say,“The branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.”
20Granted! They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but fear!
21For if God did not spare the natural branches, perhaps he will not spare you.
22Notice therefore the kindness and harshness of God– harshness toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness toward you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.
23And even they– if they do not continue in their unbelief– will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
24For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural branches be grafted back into their own olive tree?
25For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: A partial hardening has happened to Israel until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.
26And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:“The Deliverer will come out of Zion; he will remove ungodliness from Jacob.
27And this is my covenant with them, when I take away their sins.”
28In regard to the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but in regard to election they are dearly loved for the sake of the fathers.
29For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.
30Just as you were formerly disobedient to God, but have now received mercy due to their disobedience,
31so they too have now been disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy.
32For God has consigned all people to disobedience so that he may show mercy to them all.
29Just as Isaiah predicted,“If the Lord of Heaven’s Armies had not left us descendants, we would have become like Sodom, and we would have resembled Gomorrah.”
30Israel’s Rejection Culpable What shall we say then?– that the Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness obtained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith,
31but Israel even though pursuing a law of righteousness did not attain it.
32Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but(as if it were possible) by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone,
10let their eyes be darkened so that they may not see, and make their backs bend continually.”
11I ask then, they did not stumble into an irrevocable fall, did they? Absolutely not! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make Israel jealous.
12Now if their transgression means riches for the world and their defeat means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full restoration bring?
6It is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all those who are descended from Israel are truly Israel,
7nor are all the children Abraham’s true descendants; rather“through Isaac will your descendants be counted.”
1Israel’s Rejection not Complete nor Final So I ask, God has not rejected his people, has he? Absolutely not! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.
2God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew! Do you not know what the scripture says about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?
27And Isaiah cries out on behalf of Israel,“Though the number of the children of Israel are as the sand of the sea, only the remnant will be saved,
17Now if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among them and participated in the richness of the olive root,
11even before they were born or had done anything good or bad(so that God’s purpose in election would stand, not by works but by his calling)–
40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and turn to me, and I would heal them.”
4who are Israelites. To them belong the adoption as sons, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple worship, and the promises.
15For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
1Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God on behalf of my fellow Israelites is for their salvation.
10You once were not a people, but now you are God’s people. You were shown no mercy, but now you have received mercy.
19But again I ask, didn’t Israel understand? First Moses says,“I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation; with a senseless nation I will provoke you to anger.”
20And Isaiah is even bold enough to say,“I was found by those who did not seek me; I became well known to those who did not ask for me.”
14But their minds were closed. For to this very day, the same veil remains when they hear the old covenant read. It has not been removed because only in Christ is it taken away.
16So then, it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy.
11In Christ we too have been claimed as God’s own possession, since we were predestined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will
23And what if he is willing to make known the wealth of his glory on the objects of mercy that he has prepared beforehand for glory–
24even us, whom he has called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?
1The LORD will certainly have compassion on Jacob; he will again choose Israel as his special people and restore them to their land. Resident foreigners will join them and unite with the family of Jacob.
18So then, God has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden.
14And concerning them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:‘You will listen carefully yet will never understand, you will look closely yet will never comprehend.
9The Condemnation of the World What then? Are we better off? Certainly not, for we have already charged that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin,
18They do not comprehend or understand, for their eyes are blind and cannot see; their minds do not discern.
12so that although they look they may look but not see, and although they hear they may hear but not understand, so they may not repent and be forgiven.”
