Verse 4

When I remember these things, I pour out my soul within me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept a feast.

  • 1 Chr 15:15-28 : 15 And the children of the Levites bore the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles on it, as Moses had commanded according to the word of the LORD. 16 And David spoke to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of music, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding by lifting up the voice with joy. 17 So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; and from his brethren, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and from the sons of Merari their brethren, Ethan the son of Kushaiah; 18 And with them their brethren of the second rank, Zechariah, Ben, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Elipheleh, Mikneiah, and Obededom, and Jeiel, the porters. 19 So the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were appointed to sound with cymbals of brass; 20 And Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries tuned to Alamoth; 21 And Mattithiah, Elipheleh, Mikneiah, Obededom, Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps tuned to the Sheminith to excel. 22 And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was in charge of the singing: he instructed about the singing, because he was skillful. 23 And Berechiah and Elkanah were doorkeepers for the ark. 24 And Shebaniah, Jehoshaphat, Nethaneel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, blew the trumpets before the ark of God; and Obededom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark. 25 So David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the house of Obededom with joy. 26 And it came to pass, when God helped the Levites who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, that they offered seven bulls and seven rams. 27 And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites who bore the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the singers: David also wore an ephod of linen. 28 Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of cornets, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps.
  • 1 Chr 16:1-9 : 1 So they brought the ark of God and set it in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God. 2 And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD. 3 And he gave to every person in Israel, both man and woman, a loaf of bread, a good piece of meat, and a flagon of wine. 4 And he appointed certain Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, to record, and to thank and praise the LORD God of Israel: 5 Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obededom, and Jeiel with psalteries and harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals; 6 Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God. 7 Then on that day David delivered this psalm to thank the LORD into the hand of Asaph and his brothers. 8 Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. 9 Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk about all his wondrous works. 10 Glory in his holy name; let the heart of those who seek the LORD rejoice. 11 Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his face continually. 12 Remember his marvelous works that he has done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth; 13 O seed of Israel his servant, you children of Jacob, his chosen ones. 14 He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth. 15 Always remember his covenant, the word he commanded to a thousand generations; 16 Even the covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath to Isaac; 17 And confirmed to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant, 18 Saying, 'To you will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;' 19 When you were few in number, even very few, and strangers in it. 20 And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people; 21 He allowed no one to do them wrong; yes, he reproved kings for their sakes, 22 Saying, 'Do not touch my anointed, and do my prophets no harm.' 23 Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; show forth from day to day his salvation. 24 Declare his glory among the nations; his marvelous works among all peoples. 25 For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. 26 For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. 27 Glory and honor are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place. 28 Give unto the LORD, you families of the peoples, give unto the LORD glory and strength. 29 Give unto the LORD the glory due to his name; bring an offering, and come before him; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. 30 Fear before him, all the earth; the world also shall be established, that it not be moved. 31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; and let men say among the nations, 'The LORD reigns.' 32 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the fields rejoice, and all that is in them. 33 Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD, because he comes to judge the earth. 34 O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good; for his mercy endures forever. 35 And say, 'Save us, O God of our salvation, gather us together, and deliver us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name, and glory in your praise.' 36 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel forever and ever. And all the people said, 'Amen,' and praised the LORD. 37 So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD Asaph and his brothers, to minister before the ark continually, as every day's work required. 38 And Obededom with their brethren, sixty-eight; Obededom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be gatekeepers. 39 And Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at Gibeon, 40 To offer burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offering continually morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written in the law of the LORD, which he commanded Israel; 41 And with them Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest that were chosen, who were designated by name, to give thanks to the LORD, because his mercy endures forever; 42 And with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound, and with musical instruments of God. And the sons of Jeduthun were gatekeepers. 43 And all the people departed, each man to his house; and David returned to bless his house.

  • Job 29:2-30:31 : 2 Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God watched over me; 3 When His lamp shone upon my head, and by His light I walked through darkness; 4 As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tent; 5 When the Almighty was still with me, when my children were around me; 6 When I washed my steps with cream, and the rock poured out for me streams of oil; 7 When I went out to the gate of the city, when I took my seat in the square! 8 The young men saw me and hid themselves; even the aged arose and stood. 9 The princes refrained from speaking, and laid their hands on their mouths. 10 The nobles kept silence, and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths. 11 When the ear heard me, it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it approved me; 12 Because I delivered the poor who cried out, the fatherless, and the one who had no helper. 13 The blessing of a dying man came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. 14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a crown. 15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame. 16 I was a father to the poor, and I searched out the case I did not know. 17 And I broke the fangs of the wicked, and plucked the victim from his teeth. 18 Then I said, 'I will die in my nest, and I will multiply my days as the sand.' 19 My root spread out to the waters, and the dew lay all night on my branch. 20 My glory was fresh within me, and my bow was renewed in my hand. 21 Men listened to me and waited, and kept silence for my counsel. 22 After my words they spoke not again; and my speech fell gently upon them. 23 They waited for me as for the rain, and they opened their mouths wide as for the latter rain. 24 If I smiled at them, they could hardly believe it; and the light of my countenance they did not cast down. 25 I chose their path and sat as their chief, and lived as a king among his troops, as one who comforts the mourners. 1 But now those who are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to set with the dogs of my flock. 2 Indeed, how might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age has perished? 3 For want and famine they were solitary, fleeing into the wilderness in former times desolate and waste. 4 Who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their food. 5 They were driven out from among men, they cried after them as after a thief; 6 To dwell in the clefts of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks. 7 Among the bushes they brayed, under the nettles they gathered together. 8 They were children of fools, yes, children of base men: they were viler than the earth. 9 And now I am their song, yes, I am their byword. 10 They abhor me, they flee far from me, and do not hesitate to spit in my face. 11 Because He has loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me. 12 Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction. 13 They mar my path, they advance my calamity, they have no helper. 14 They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me. 15 Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind, and my welfare passes away like a cloud. 16 And now my soul is poured out within me; the days of affliction have seized me. 17 My bones are pierced in me at night, and my sinews find no rest. 18 By the great force of my disease my garment is changed: it binds me about like the collar of my coat. 19 He has cast me into the mire, and I have become like dust and ashes. 20 I cry to You, and You do not hear me: I stand up, and You regard me not. 21 You have become cruel to me: with Your strong hand You oppose Yourself against me. 22 You lift me up to the wind; You cause me to ride upon it, and dissolve my substance. 23 For I know that You will bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living. 24 However, He will not stretch out His hand to the grave, though they cry out in their destruction. 25 Did I not weep for those in trouble? Was not my soul grieved for the poor? 26 When I looked for good, then evil came to me; and when I waited for light, darkness came. 27 My insides boiled and did not rest: the days of affliction confronted me. 28 I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation. 29 I am a brother to jackals, and a companion to owls. 30 My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat. 31 My harp is also turned to mourning, and my flute to the voice of those who weep.
