    1David fled from Naioth in Ramah. He came and said to Jonathan, "What have I done? What is my guilt, and what is my sin before your father that he seeks my life?"

    2Jonathan said to him, "Far be it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing great or small without revealing it to me. Why then would my father hide this matter from me? It's not so!"

    3But David swore again and said, "Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he thinks, 'Let Jonathan not know this, lest he be grieved.' But as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death."

    1Saul spoke to his son Jonathan and to all his servants, commanding them to kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son, held a deep affection for David.

    2Jonathan warned David, saying, "My father Saul is seeking to kill you. So please be on guard in the morning; find a safe hiding place and stay there.

    3I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are hiding. I will speak with him about you, and if I learn anything, I will let you know.

    4Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul, his father, saying, "The king should not sin against his servant David. He has done no wrong to you; on the contrary, his actions have greatly benefited you.

    5He risked his life to kill the Philistine, and the LORD brought about a great victory for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. So why would you sin by shedding innocent blood by killing David without cause?

    6Saul listened to Jonathan and swore, "As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be put to death."

    7Then Jonathan called David and told him everything. He brought David to Saul, and David was once again in Saul’s presence as before.

    28Jonathan answered Saul, 'David earnestly asked me for permission to go to Bethlehem.'

    29He said, ‘Please let me go, for our family is holding a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to attend. If I have found favor in your eyes, let me go and see my brothers.’ That is why he has not come to the king’s table.

    30Saul’s anger flared up at Jonathan, and he said to him, 'You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you have sided with the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness?'

    31As long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established. Now send someone to bring him to me, for he must die!'

    32Jonathan responded to his father Saul and asked, 'Why should he be put to death? What has he done?'

    33But Saul hurled his spear at Jonathan to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father was determined to kill David.

    34Jonathan got up from the table in fierce anger. He did not eat any food on the second day of the month, because he was grieved at his father’s shameful treatment of David.

    35In the morning, Jonathan went out to the field to meet David at the appointed time, and he took a young boy with him.

    18The two of them made a covenant before the LORD. Then David remained in the woods, and Jonathan returned to his house.

    45But the people said to Saul, 'Should Jonathan die, he who has brought about this great deliverance for Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for he acted with God’s help today.' So the people rescued Jonathan, and he was not put to death.
