3But David swore again and said, "Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he thinks, 'Let Jonathan not know this, lest he be grieved.' But as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death."
4Jonathan said to David, "Whatever you say, I will do for you."
5David said to Jonathan, "Tomorrow is the new moon, and I am supposed to sit at the king’s table to eat. Let me go so that I may hide in the field until the evening of the third day."
6If your father notices my absence, then say, 'David earnestly asked my permission to run to Bethlehem, his hometown, because there is an annual sacrifice there for his whole family.'
18David fled and escaped. He went to Samuel at Ramah and told him everything that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth.
19When Saul was told, 'David is at Naioth in Ramah,' he acted accordingly.

3I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are hiding. I will speak with him about you, and if I learn anything, I will let you know.
4Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul, his father, saying, "The king should not sin against his servant David. He has done no wrong to you; on the contrary, his actions have greatly benefited you.
5He risked his life to kill the Philistine, and the LORD brought about a great victory for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. So why would you sin by shedding innocent blood by killing David without cause?
27But on the second day of the month, David's place was still empty. So Saul asked Jonathan, 'Why hasn’t the son of Jesse come to the meal either yesterday or today?'
28Jonathan answered Saul, 'David earnestly asked me for permission to go to Bethlehem.'
29He said, ‘Please let me go, for our family is holding a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to attend. If I have found favor in your eyes, let me go and see my brothers.’ That is why he has not come to the king’s table.
11'This day you have seen with your own eyes how the LORD delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you and said, "I will not lay my hand on my lord because he is the LORD’s anointed."'
29David replied, 'What have I done now? Was it not just a question?'
1David said to himself, "One day I will perish at the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up looking for me throughout the territory of Israel, and I will be safe from him."
8Then David said to God, "I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg You, take away the guilt of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly."
20Now then, do not let my blood fall to the ground far from the presence of the LORD. For the king of Israel has come out to search for a single flea, as one hunts a partridge in the mountains.
21Then Saul said, "I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will not harm you again, because my life was precious in your sight today. Look, I have acted foolishly and have made a great mistake."
17David sang this lament for Saul and his son Jonathan:
18The two of them made a covenant before the LORD. Then David remained in the woods, and Jonathan returned to his house.
8David said to Achish, "But what have I done? What have you found in your servant from the day I first came to you until now, that I may not go and fight the enemies of my lord the king?"
3David asked him, 'Where have you come from?' He replied, 'I escaped from the camp of Israel.'
4David said to him, 'What happened? Tell me.' He answered, 'The people fled from the battle, and many fell and died. Saul and Jonathan, his son, are also dead.'
15Was this the first time I inquired of God for him? Of course not! Far be it from me! Let not the king accuse me or any of my father's family, for your servant knows nothing about this whole affair—whether great or small.'

1One day Jonathan, the son of Saul, said to the young man who carried his armor, 'Come, let us cross over to the garrison of the Philistines on the other side.' But he did not tell his father.
9But Obadiah said, "What have I done wrong that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be killed?"
13Saul said to him, 'Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, giving him bread and a sword and inquiring of God for him, so that he has risen against me to lie in wait, as he does today?'
9David got up afterward, went out of the cave, and called after Saul, 'My lord the king!' When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down with his face to the ground and paid homage.
35In the morning, Jonathan went out to the field to meet David at the appointed time, and he took a young boy with him.
1David got up and left, while Jonathan returned to the city.
7Then Jonathan called David and told him everything. He brought David to Saul, and David was once again in Saul’s presence as before.
10The priest replied, 'The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want it, take it. There is no other here.' David said, 'There is none like it; give it to me.'
17When David saw the angel striking the people, he said to the Lord, "I alone have sinned; I, the shepherd, have acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Let Your hand fall upon me and my family."
8'You have all conspired against me! No one reveals to me when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse. None of you feels sorry for me or tells me that my son has stirred up my servant to lie in wait for me, as he does today.'
41When the boy had gone, David got up from the south side and fell facedown on the ground. He bowed three times, and then they kissed each other and wept together—David weeping the most.
