    1Saul spoke to his son Jonathan and to all his servants, commanding them to kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son, held a deep affection for David.

    2Jonathan warned David, saying, "My father Saul is seeking to kill you. So please be on guard in the morning; find a safe hiding place and stay there.

    3I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are hiding. I will speak with him about you, and if I learn anything, I will let you know.

    4Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul, his father, saying, "The king should not sin against his servant David. He has done no wrong to you; on the contrary, his actions have greatly benefited you.

    5He risked his life to kill the Philistine, and the LORD brought about a great victory for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. So why would you sin by shedding innocent blood by killing David without cause?

    6Saul listened to Jonathan and swore, "As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be put to death."

    16Then Jonathan, Saul's son, went to David in the woods and strengthened his hand in God.

    17He said to him, 'Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father will not find you; you will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even Saul my father knows this.'

    18The two of them made a covenant before the LORD. Then David remained in the woods, and Jonathan returned to his house.

    13May the LORD punish Jonathan severely if I do not inform you and send you away in peace when my father intends to harm you. May the LORD be with you as He has been with my father.

    22Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, "Allow David to remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight."
