He raised his voice, called out, and said to them, "Listen to me, leaders of Shechem, so that God may listen to you! 8 The trees once went out to anoint a king over themselves. They said to the olive tree, 'Reign over us.' 9 But the olive tree replied, 'Should I stop producing my rich oil, by which gods and humans are honored, to go sway over the trees?' 10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'You come and reign over us.' 11 But the fig tree replied, 'Should I stop producing my sweetness and my good fruit, to go sway over the trees?' 12 Then the trees said to the vine, 'You come and reign over us.' 13 But the vine answered them, 'Should I stop producing my wine that cheers both God and humans, in order to sway over the trees?' 14 Then all the trees said to the bramble, 'You come and reign over us.' 15 The bramble said to the trees, 'If you truly mean to anoint me as king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade.     18Then he will turn his attention to the coastlands and will capture many. However, a commander will put an end to his arrogance and will repay him for his scorn.

    19Afterward, he will turn back toward the fortresses of his own land, but he will stumble and fall and not be found again.

    20In his place, one will arise who will send out a tax collector to maintain the royal splendor. In a short time, he will be destroyed, though not by anger or in battle.

    28The king of the North will return to his land with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant. He will take action and then return to his own land.

    29At the appointed time, he will invade the South again, but this time it will not be as it was before.

    30Ships from the western coastlands will oppose him, and he will lose heart. Then he will turn back and vent his anger against the holy covenant. He will return and show favor to those who forsake the holy covenant.

    31Forces from him will rise up and desecrate the sanctuary fortress. They will abolish the daily sacrifice and set up the abomination of desolation.

    32Those who act wickedly against the covenant will be corrupted by flattery, but the people who know their God will stand firm and take action.
