  • Isa 36:1-9 : 1 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, marched against all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them. 2 And the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to King Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway to the launderer’s field. 3 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, with Shebna the scribe and Joah son of Asaph the recorder, went out to him. 4 The Rabshakeh said to them, 'Say to Hezekiah: This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: What is this confidence you rely on? 5 You say—it’s only empty words—‘I have advice and strength for war.’ But now, on whom do you trust that you have rebelled against me? 6 Look, you trust in the staff of this broken reed, Egypt, which if anyone leans on it, it will pierce their hand and wound them. So is Pharaoh, king of Egypt, to all who trust in him. 7 But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ isn’t He the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, 'You must worship at this altar’? 8 Now then, make a wager with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses—if you can provide riders for them! 9 How then can you turn away even one of the least of my master’s officials? And you rely on Egypt for chariots and horsemen? 10 Now, have I attacked this land to destroy it without the LORD’s approval? The LORD Himself told me, 'Go up against this land and destroy it.' 11 Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, 'Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, since we understand it. Don’t speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.' 12 But the Rabshakeh replied, 'Has my master sent me only to your master and to you to speak these words? Has he not sent me to the men sitting on the wall—who, like you, will have to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?' 13 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in Hebrew: 'Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! 14 This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he cannot deliver you! 15 And do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD by saying, ‘The LORD will surely rescue us; this city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.’ 16 Do not listen to Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then each of you will eat from your own vine and your own fig tree and drink water from your own cistern, 17 until I come and take you to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18 Do not let Hezekiah mislead you by saying, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’ Have the gods of any nations ever delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand? 20 Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their land from my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem from my hand? 21 But the people remained silent and did not answer him a word, because the king had commanded, 'Do not answer him.' 22 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the household; Shebna, the scribe; and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and reported to him the words of the Rabshakeh.

  • Isa 22:1-7 : 1 This is an oracle concerning the Valley of Vision: What is wrong with you now, that you have all gone up to the rooftops? 2 The city is full of noise and tumult, a city of revelry. Your slain were not killed by the sword, nor did they die in battle. 3 All your rulers have fled together; they were captured without a bow. All who were found were bound together, though they had fled far away. 4 Therefore I said, 'Turn away from me, let me weep bitterly. Do not try to comfort me concerning the destruction of my people.' 5 For the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, has ordained a day of panic, trampling, and confusion in the Valley of Vision, breaking down walls and crying out to the mountains. 6 Elam carried a quiver, along with chariots and horsemen. Kir laid bare the shield. 7 Your choicest valleys were filled with chariots, and the horsemen took their stand at the gate.
  • Isa 28:14-22 : 14 Therefore, hear the word of the LORD, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem. 15 Because you have said, 'We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have made an agreement. When the overwhelming scourge passes through, it will not reach us, for we have made lies our refuge and falsehood our hiding place.' 16 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: 'Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation. The one who believes will not panic.' 17 I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line. Hail will sweep away your refuge of lies, and water will flood your hiding place. 18 Your covenant with death will be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand. When the overwhelming scourge passes through, you will be trampled by it. 19 As often as it passes through, it will seize you. Morning after morning, day and night, it will pass through. The understanding of this message will bring only terror. 20 The bed is too short to stretch out on, and the blanket is too narrow to wrap oneself in. 21 For the LORD will rise up as He did at Mount Perazim; He will rouse Himself as in the Valley of Gibeon to do His work, His strange work, and perform His task, His alien task. 22 Now do not mock, or your chains will be even heavier, for I have heard from the Lord GOD of Hosts a decree of destruction against the whole land.
  • Isa 29:1-9 : 1 Woe to Ariel, Ariel, the city where David camped! Add year upon year; let the festivals continue. 2 Yet I will bring distress to Ariel, and it will become mourning and lamentation; it will be to me like an altar hearth. 3 I will encamp in a circle against you, I will besiege you with towers, and I will raise siegeworks against you. 4 You will be brought low; from the ground you will speak, and your words will come in a muffled way from the dust. Your voice will sound like that of a ghost from the earth, and your speech will whisper from the dust. 5 But the horde of your enemies will be like fine dust, and the horde of the ruthless ones will be like blowing chaff. Suddenly, in an instant, 6 The LORD Almighty will come with thunder, earthquake, and a loud noise—storm and tempest, and a consuming flame of fire. 7 And all the nations warring against Ariel, all who attack her and her defenses, those who bring her distress, will be like a dream, like a vision of the night. 8 It will be as when a hungry man dreams he is eating, but he wakes and is still hungry; or as when a thirsty man dreams he is drinking, but he wakes and is still faint and craving. So it will be with all the hordes of nations that fight against Mount Zion. 9 Be astonished and amazed! Blind yourselves and be blind! They are drunk, but not with wine—they stagger, but not from strong drink.
