16 When they heard all the words, they turned to each other in fear and said to Baruch, "We must report all these words to the king."
17 Then they asked Baruch, "Tell us, how did you write all these words? Did Jeremiah dictate to you?"
22 Now the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, and a firepot was burning in front of him.
23 As Jehudi read three or four columns of the scroll, the king would cut them off with a scribe’s knife and throw them into the fire in the firepot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire.
24 Neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words were afraid or tore their garments in sorrow.
25 Even though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.
26 Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, a royal prince, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the LORD had hidden them.
27 After the king burned the scroll containing the words Baruch had written at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
28 "Take another scroll and write on it all the original words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned.
29 And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘This is what the LORD says: You burned this scroll, saying, “Why did you write on it that the king of Babylon will surely come and destroy this land and leave it without people or animals?”’
18 Shaphan the scribe also told the king, "Hilkiah the priest has given me the scroll," and Shaphan read it aloud before the king.
19 When the king heard the words of the Law, he tore his clothes in distress.
20 Then the king commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Abdon son of Micah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah, the king's servant, saying:
21 "Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah about the words of this scroll that has been found. For great is the LORD's wrath that is poured out on us because our ancestors did not obey the words of the LORD by following everything written in this scroll."
