The leaders of the ancestral families from the clan of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, from the families of the sons of Joseph, approached Moses and the leaders, the chiefs of the ancestral families of the Israelites.
They said, 'My lord, the LORD commanded to give the land as an inheritance to the Israelites by lot, and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad, our brother, to his daughters.'
'Now, if they marry someone from a different tribe of the Israelites, their inheritance will be taken from our ancestral inheritance and added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry. Thus, their inheritance will be removed from the lot of our inheritance.'
'And when the Jubilee for the Israelites comes, their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they are married and will be taken away from the inheritance of our ancestral tribe.'
Then Moses commanded the Israelites according to the word of the LORD, saying, 'What the tribe of the sons of Joseph is saying is right.'
'This is what the LORD has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying: They may marry whomever is good in their eyes, but they must marry someone within a clan of their father’s tribe.'
