    1Abimelech, son of Jerubbaal, went to Shechem to visit his mother’s relatives. He spoke to them and to the entire family of his mother’s household, saying:

    2"Please ask all the leaders of Shechem, 'Which is better for you: that seventy men—all the sons of Jerubbaal—rule over you, or that one man rules over you?' Remember, I am your own flesh and blood."

    3When Abimelech’s mother’s relatives spoke all of his words to the leaders of Shechem, their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, "He is our brother."

    4They gave him seventy pieces of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, and with it Abimelech hired worthless and reckless men who followed him.

    5He went to his father’s house at Ophrah and killed his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerubbaal, on one stone. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerubbaal, escaped by hiding himself.

    6Then all the leaders of Shechem and Beth-Millo gathered together. They went and made Abimelech king by the oak near the pillar in Shechem.

    7When Jotham was told about this, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim. He raised his voice, called out, and said to them, "Listen to me, leaders of Shechem, so that God may listen to you!
